Even though much time has passed since the
initial posting, I wanted to make a couple
of points. I am an RN and woke up this
morning with an enlarged uvula. This is
only the second time that this has
happened to me; the last time was in 1982!
I don't have a history of sinus
infections or seasonal allergies, but
(coincidentally) I had eaten seafood (not
shellfish) the night before each of these
incidences. I know, a big coincidence
since I am not allergic to seafood, but it
was enough for me to go to the hospital.
As a nurse, one has to worry FIRST about
airway! I don't really care what the
cause. All I know is that I felt like
every time I attempted to swallow, I was
sort of pulling this long thing down my
throat and I started to feel a little
anxiety. Here are a couple of points that
you all should consider:
-Don't ignore the problem. It could be
self limiting, but it is often the symptom
of something else (allergy, infection,
etc.)
-Anything that swells in/around your
throat has the potential to obstruct your
airway.
-I'm not sure if post-nasal drip triggered
my swelling or was in response to it, but
they do seem to come hand in hand.
-Some of you refer to a "dry" throat, but
it is interesting to note that the uvula
is usually MOIST when it is swollen.
That's not typical of a normal sized
uvula. If it is moist, then it is likely
due to some irritating mucous that is
exacerbating the condition.
-You should not take antibiotics since a
common cause for this is a VIRAL infection
(antibiotics do not help viral illnesses
and can actually make it worst).
-See a doctor !!! One of the people
responding mentioned her epiglottis. An
inflammation of the epiglottis can be
serious (narrows airway) and a swollen
uvula can accompany it. You might think
your problem is the uvula, but in fact it
could be the epiglottis, which lies deep
in your throat passage.
-Benadryl usually helps reduce the
swelling. This is the best that you can
do: treat the symptom (since most of us
don't know the cause) and it gives you
some relief until you can get to the
doctor's office. The doctor can prescribe
other things, such as a stronger histamine
blocker, steroids, anti-inflammatory, etc.
BTW - Benadryl can make you VERY drowsy.
-As for the SALT/PEPPER mix, be careful.
As one writer mentioned, your sinuses are
cavities that are well connected to your
throat areas. If you get a "whiff" of
that pepper and start gagging or sneezing,
I would worry about anything that could
cause you to vomit because of the already
compromised airway. Last thing you need
is to aspirate your own vomit, saliva,
mucous (it goes into your lungs and can
kill you). I would stick with the
saltwater gargle ONLY if you think you
won't choke on it.
-As an added precaution, don't eat or
drink anything before going to your
doctor. Some conditions (e.g. botulism)
tend to paralyze muscles and can affect
your gag reflex, leading to choking.
-One final thing: if you wake up and find
you've been snoring (I never do, but was
last night) as the result of trying to
push this lumpy growth out of your throat,
try not to panic. My first experience
with this was terrifying since the uvula
was about the width of my thumb. I was on
my honeymoon in the mountains and the only
way that I could breath comfortably was by
leaning completing over. This caused the
growth to plop out of the way.

Tried All the Combination Previously Posted... It Worked Posted: 07-28-07 04:58am
Hey guys, I am really glad to get to know
this blog, recently there were few
suggestions made here on how to get rid of
the lump llike feeling behind your
throatd...I had the lump like feeling for
over a two years now, and tried all kind
of medications perscribed by doctors maily
anti Allergenic, but they didn't work.
Eventually I tried the following, and
believe or not, I woke up the next day,
the lump was gone, so I wanted to write
them here to benefit the others..
1- Gurgle a warm water mixed with Mint,
Salt, and Pepper.
2- Plant Enzyme Pills, three times daily
with the meal
3- Steam your face with hot water with
mints in it, while your head is covered to
enhale a warm mint steam.
4- Stop drinking coffee
The above seems to help to get rid of the
lump, it worked for me, and if it works
for anyone else, please let me know how it
goes..
Cheers

Steroids And Surgery Posted: 11-21-07 09:21am
I am a 60 yr old physician with the same
problem of an enlarged uvula. The first
time I noticed it was a few weeks ago when
I awoke from a sound sleep choking for
breath. We tried a short course of
steroids, but it continued to bother me.
Since it made me snore and worsened my
sleep disorder, we decided to amputate it.
I will be having that done today...it's a
simple office procedure.

Enlarged Uvula Posted: 12-01-07 12:31pm
After reading all the postings on several
sites, I agree with only one observation -
enlarged uvula's are mostly due to
dehydration. A good read is "Your body's
many cries for water". As a rule, we
are a dehydrated society and I am
convinced of this because every time I
experience my enlarged uvula, I can trace
almost no water consumption over the last
days. After a few hours of constant
drinking (and peeing !) the big lump I
can't swallow goes away... until next time
I go for too long without drinking water
regularly.
It can't hurt to try just plain water to
help the situation.

I just to say I am completely relieved
that this forum exists. For the past three
days I have woken up with an extremely
sore throat, so sore that it hurt to just
swallow my own saliva. This morning I woke
up and it felt like I had something stuck
in the back of my throat and I actually
tried to "hawk" it up and when it didn't
come out and I was gagging every time, I
went to the mirror and noticed that my
uvula was seemed slightly flattened and
elongated to the point where it hit the
back of my tongue.
I am taking Ibuprofen for the pain every 5
hours and Acetaminophen interchangeably
and it helps the pain obviously, but it
does not reduce the swelling or whatever.
Before I read this I was thinking all
these horrible thoughts like throat
cancer, a possible STD, etc. This relieved
me a little. I am completely miserable and
I am going to go to the doctor's and see
if she can prescribe me anything.

I have the same enlarged Uvula, quite
terrible feeling. And I had the same
concerns as the nurse above about all the
possibilities about constricted airway but
I went to the ER where my pcp sent once I
called, they pretty much ridiculed me, did
nothing. They were nice until they tested
me for strep and blood work, found nothing
other than elevated enzymes and than it
was o well its some kind of virus maybe
mono will shop up in few weeks but maybe
not... so does th emono cause the enlarged
uvula? noo, thats a different virus
probably....so quite a painful visit. I
can't take steroids, I am allergic to
codein, so I took pepcid and benadryl. It
has goten a bit better and than worse
again after pepcid. I am drinkin water I
think I do notice it helps, and I might
have drank too litle before it happened,
especially since I had terrible cold
symptoms. I am just so annoyed that we are
all siting here frustrated and we go to
the doctor pay the copay or visit, spend
hours there, get tested like lab rats and
only to get noooooo result. Ok, I guess I
know my test results, so I can diagnose
myself now....great! Why dont they just
set up labs and get rid of the doctors in
the ER... rggggggh. this is not my only
frustration with them, so many
incompentencies, I am just disgusted at
this point.

Just wondering, how many of you have
trouble snoring and how many of you have
experienced this after drinking?
I'm going to try the salt water now:)

This Just Happened... Posted: 01-03-08 16:03pm
I was in New Orleans for New Years and
woke up with what I thought was a big
flegm ball and when I coughed it up I
could feel it in my mouth, but it wouldn't
come out. When I finally saw it in the
mirror I couldn't believe it, my uvula, it
was the size of a grape.
I found this site and did some research on
another and since I wasn't running a fever
or have a sore throat I settled on the
fact that I had been drinking (a lot) and
didn't have much if any water the entire
day before, dehydration. So I immediately
drank a lot of water and took some
Benadryl and it went down. I made sure to
keep myself hydrated throughout my trip.
It worked and I did not have a
reoccurrence, but it did scare me pretty
good.
I too am fortunate there is a forum like
this.

Happens a Lot Posted: 01-06-08 09:37am
I have had this "uvula issue" for years.
When I was younger it seemed to happen if
I drank to much (especially hard liquor).
Now it only happens a couple times each
year, and I'm not drinking. I'm not sure
why it's happening - but it does make you
worried.
As for the salt on the tongue thing - I
have found that if I garggle/soak my
throat with warm salt water, it does help
and if I do it a few times in a day - it's
usually fine the next morning. Oh- and
also I sleep on my stomach the next night,
because it does seem to swell up more when
I get caught sleeping more on my back.
Good luck - and if you're like me, when it
happens - you're willing to try any
household remedy to make it go away.

Mine Occured After Surgery - Anyone Else? Posted: 01-13-08 20:08pm
After shoulder surgery (I was routinely
intubated) my throat was extremely sore.
The next day, I had a constant feeling of
something in my throat. My uvula is not
very swollen but it does touch my tongue.
It's been 5 days and has only slightly
improved. Any thoughts?

enlarged uvula Posted: 03-30-08 17:26pm
I was getting worried about this, it's
been troubling me now for a few weeks. My
uvula is not sore, but it is quite swollen
and I quite often have an urge to gag...
It tends to be worse the morning after I
have a drink (even fairly modest amounts
of alcohol tend to make it worse). I had
my tonsils out as a child. I don't think I
have a throat infection - at least I don't
have any other symptoms.

updating as i try things Posted: 05-07-08 10:56am
After reading years of these posts, i am
glad to see that my three days of problems
seem not to be that uncommon. I didn't
experience the dry mouth problems, but my
throat is a little soar. I did drink the
night before, beer though, and i didn't
notice a problem until at least late
afternoon the next day. I am also well
hydrated, and was drinking lots of water
before findign this post without much
help. I just gargled salt water after
reading these posts and its seems to have
helped a bit but nothing spectacular. I
will try it several times again today and
post a quick update after each "session"
just to let people know what i felt at
that moment. Hopefully this will help in
realizing what helped and what didn't.

I think this sensation combined with
swollen papillae on the back of the tongue
can make a real sensation of a lump. This
is , im quite sure, what im suffering
from. my throat is unhappy with me from
smoking likely! I also drink a large
coffee in the morning (sometimes more
during the day) which i had seen in
someone's post was suggested against. I
question the legitimacy of this warning
but if it is legitimate then it may in
fact be one of the causes of my
discomfort.
