Best Form of Birth Control For Me? Posted: 01-24-05 19:08pm
Hello, I am 18 years old and have made the
decision to go on birth control. I've
already spoken to my mother and she is
fine with it. The big decision ahead of
me is which type of birth control I should
go on. I'm kind of stuck between the pill
and depo provera...
Which method do you think would be best
for an 18 year old??
Is depo provera actually safe? I just
need reassurance I suppose.
Thanks all for your time!

If you have weight issues or have a large
frame I wouldn't do depo. I gained a lot
of weight from that. If not it would
prob be fine. You may not get a period
at all which is strange, but supposedly
safe. I like the good old pill.

Am 18 myself and I choose the pill because
I think that it is alot safer than depo.
I've heard that people who take depo don't
see there periods for months which to me
is not so cool I want to see mine every
month to make sure everything is ok and to
make sure that am not pregnant. That's
just my opinion...You should do some
research to help your decision.
Good luck

Depo is perfectly safe, as is the pill.
The advantage of depo is that you don't
have a daily pill to remember, so the
likelyhood of an "accident" is greatly
reduced. The advantage of the pill is
that there are different dosages of
hormones, so if one has side affects, you
can switch to another easily. I would
talk at length with your doctor before you
decide. Also remember that neither
protects you from sexually transmitted
diseases.

I reccommend the pill because if there are
side effects you can discontinue it right
away. If depo doesn't sit well in your
system, there isn't much you can do about
it. At least initially, since it actually
takes several months for your body to get
used to birth control, I would do the
pill.

I've thought about going on depo for a
while, but chose against it after I had
done some research and spoke with my
doctor. With the shot, you can bleed the
entire time, not bleed at all, spot every
now and then, and gain a bunch of weight.
I didn't like the chances of bleeding a
lot or not having a period at all.. But
what triggered my decision was.. My
doctor told me that a lot of women who
have been on the depo shot, it has made it
near impossible to conceive a child. One
of my friends was only on it for about a
year.. She had fertility tests done
before she was on it, all was good. After
coming off of it, her and her husband have
been trying to conceive for over 3 years
and no such luck. She went to a
specialist and now they say she cannot
carry a child, the walls of her uterus are
too thin or something like that.
So if you never want kids, then i'd get on
it. But if you want kids one day, get the
pills. I personally like having control
of what I put in my body, instead of
massive doses of hormones every 3 months
like the shot.
