To describe: pulsatile tinnitus is a
sensation/audible pulse heard in one or
both ears; sound of heart-beat in ear,
especially at night or when under stress
or exertion; causes are numerous, but most
commonly seem to be related to
sinus/middle ear problems (pressure in my
case);also with high blood pressure, a
"narrowing" of the carotid artery, or vein
running too close to ear-drum. Less
common, but still worrisome is a "glomous"
or benign tumor growing on the auditory
nerve.
In my case, I saw an ent many months ago,
with very little information about pt.
I am uninsured, and as he said, without an
mri, none of the above causes can be ruled
out. So he gave me a steroid shot and
flonase and pronounced me cured. Guess
what? It's back, and worse than

the worst a few days ago after I went
swimming. It was very loud but it went
away, came back a day later but quieter,
then disappeared. I went swimming today
but did not get it (or at least yet). It
is not painful. It is worse at night
because it is quiet and there are no
noises going on to mask the pulsing sound.
It is actually the same day and night.

you can only mask the sound, not get rid
of it. Try putting a fan on at night,
even in the winter or any other noise you
dont find bothersome while trying to

Hi ronnie
just thought i'd drop a line to say that I
suffer exactly the same thing and mine
gets pretty bad it started about 3 years
ago and the doctors are just starting to
help, I had an mri yesterday hoping it
would rule out what it was but i'm a
little disappointed to learn that nothing
can be done and that I may have to live
with the banging for the rest of my life.
With my thump i'm finding that it is
affecting my hearing and I am only 23 when
the noise is really bad if I press the
side of my neck where my pulse is it stops
in my ear but soon returns when I leave
go. I also suffer alot of migraines
sometimes it gets that bad I just want to
rip my ear out, its definatly a vein to
close to my ear drum.
Do you know anything that I can do to
either reduce the noise???
Will look forward to your reply

Heartbeat In Your Left Ear Posted: 08-18-06 01:14am

sitting around thats when I hear it the
most, and when I do sit around I try to
relax it seems to help alittle its the
worst in the morning when I get up out of
bed. And after reading every ones replys
I really dont think the doctor is going to
help. I feel fine and I dont think I have

Heartbeat In Right Ear Posted: 08-19-06 23:20pm
Hi everyone.
Don't know yet if my problem is related,
but would like to know if anyone out there
has had simular symtoms.
Three weeks ago, I woke up with a twitch
(more like vein pulsating-though vein is
not visible) under my right eye in what I
refer to as bag under eye. No pain
associated. It is constant.
Two weeks later, I start to hear my
heartbeat in my right ear. Again, no pain
associated and it is constant.
This coming monday, I am making a doctors
appt.
Also, I have never had any sinus and/or
ear problems.
Thanks,

Pulsitile Tinnitis Yes I Have This. Posted: 09-07-06 05:46am
I have had a heartbeat in my ears or head
or neck for about two months now.My bp and
heart rate are good and I don't suffer
from dizziness or other symptoms.I have
been reading online many many many sources
of good information about pt..But alot of
it has scared me into thinking that I
might be at risk for something
horrible. One evening as I sat and started
researching again I ran across a website
that was called ask an expert..I wasn't
even sure at the time where it was and I
bookmarked it along with over one hundred
others. This one was different ,it had a
man that was answering questions about
hearing noises in your ears and other
maladies.I wasn't even sure he was a
doctor at the time but I wrote him none
the less and told him that I understood
that pt was perhaps a life threatening
illness and was scared and didn't know how
much time that I had before I might fall
fatally ill to this problem. To my surprize
he wrote me back and told me that 40
percent of the world population has
tintinus and that 17 percent was
pulsative..This just means ability to hear
your heart. He told me that "certainly not"
to being life threatening and he said that
even he had it since he was very young and
now he was 60 plus and found it even very
comforting.He was very kind and
professional and also let me know that I
could find the most up to date information
on his website about the causes, and
effects of this illness. He has been doing
research on this issue for many years, has
been in major newspapers and journals and
even has a book about the problem.I just
thought that I would mention this to all
of you that have this issue.I just read
about pt in an article on his website
called "things that go bump in the
night".I feel that anyone experiencing
this would benefit by reading his website
and I think you will find comfort in his
words and knowledge. I don't think that
you are going to find them in a "white
coat"..But by all means if you think for
any reason you may have an issue with your
health please visit your ent doctor or
gp...I just wanted to help others that
were unnerved by what they found about pt
on the internet..His name is jonathan
hazell and his website is http://www.Tinnitus.Org. Hope this
helps you as much as it has me..I can't
tell you the hours of anxiety and
depression pt has caused me for nothing..

I have experienced listening to my
heartbeat particularly at night and
believe it to be caused by an ear
infection that is a result of moisture
accumulating in the ear canal. I have
found that a simple low cost remedy is
working for me. I use a solution of 50%
vinegar and 50% rubbing alcohol and apply
to my left ear with an eye dropper. So
far it has worked like a champ. The
heartbeat sound in my left ear disappears.
I believe the next step is to work on
shielding my ears when showering to
prevent or minimize the water input to the
ear canals. Hope this works for some of
the folks experiencing difficulty with
this problem. Gainkaptol1

I've been a musician playing in live rock
bands since high school. I'm now 42 and
out of the music biz. I never wore any
type of hearing protection and developed a
high-pitched ringing in both ears many
years ago. 2 days ago, I noticed the
heartbeat sound in my right ear. The
first night I could only hear it at night.
Now i'm hearing it all day long. I've
also been feeling "under the weather" for
the past couple of days. My wife is a
nurse and checked my blood pressure, which
is normal. I'm not overweight and I am
fairly active. This is either a worsening
of the ringing (which I assume is
tinnitus), or has something to do with my
feeling sick for the past few days. I'll
be seeing my doctor asap

Heart Sound In Ear Posted: 12-03-06 08:36am
Wow! - great to find this place....
Sometimes I feel so alone with this dual
buzzing and blood whooshing sound.
Great to read through these posts. I have
similar problems and have some thoughts.
The ringing in my ears started many years
ago and struck me like a speeding freight
train. It was so scary that I was unable
to concentrate on anything at all. The
interesting thing is that it arrived two
days after an excessive dental appointment
where I had 6 fillings with amalgam.
Went for every test possible and they all
came back non-conclusive. With a sound
test they did however confirm that I had
lost my high frequency range of hearing
(of course I had - it had been replaced
with the ringing)
i now have an intolerance to multiple
sounds and find it impossible to listen to
two people at once - well I have learned
to live with it. My treatment is to try
and not become too tired - it seems to be
much louder then.
The whooshing blood sound in my ears
started about 1 year ago and I lay in bed
at night listening to the rhythm of my
heart. The interesting thing is that the
docs are presently checking for possible
vaso constriction problems.
I have poor peripheral circulation and
often have tingling in fingers and toes.
If I scratch myself around the top of my
sock, I often get little ulcers and it
takes a long time to heal.
I mentioned to my doc that I had probs
with my feet and asked him if a blood
vessel was constricted in my ear, would
the blood going through it tend to whoosh
under pressure. He became excited and
said there is a possibility. Going back
for more tests in a couple of days.
Has anyone else had circulatory problems
like what I described?

I have the exact same problem. Sleeping
on my left side, and I can clearly hear
the noise in my left air. Sleep on my
right side, and it doesn't really anooy
me/isn't noticeable.

I have been having the same problem with
hearing my heartbeat/blood flowing in my
right ear. My ear was also plugged up I
even still heard the whoosh whoosh. I
went to the doctors and they flushed out
my ear and it is unplugged but still
whooshing. I went back to the doctor and
they gave me antibiotics and it didn't
help much. It's swooshing away and I can
actually feel it like tingling/vibrating
in my ear. My face/nose sometimes feel
numb and I get headache/dizzy. If I
press down on a spot on my neck it fades
but then I feel it pulsing in my head. I
have a bunch of wax build up still and I
just got my ear flushed out a month ago???
Any ideas on what the problem could be?

I forgot to mention I also have it in my
left ear. But it's just kind of a thump
thump thump not a swoosh and I can't hear
it over the swooshing in my right ear.
There is also a buzzing sound coming out
of my left ear.

Heartbeat In Ear Temporary Solution Posted: 02-04-07 00:06am
I have had the sound of the heartbeat in
my right ear for 9 weeks I have had a
sonar of the arteries in my neck and mri
of my brain (all test came back fine). I
have seen four doctors. The last doctor
(oto-neurlogist in birmingham, al) said he
sees about 2 people a month for this and
most of the time it it is women. He said
in most cases it could be an increase in
spinal fluid around the brain due to 10-15
lb weight gain. When I hear the sound at
work or tying to go to sleep I have been
using an ear plug in the problem ear it
make the heartbeat noise go away while it
is in. Try it and let me know if it works
for you.

Beating Ear Drum Posted: 02-07-07 21:28pm
I also have a pulsating left ear drum. I
can hear my heart beat - very bloody
annoying. Is this directly related to
high blood pressure, or are there other
causes????

Pulsatile Tinnitus Posted: 02-28-07 13:46pm
I read some posts on this PT. I have the
same thing, I have seen a MD/ ENT and so
forth. I was diagnosed with depression and
allergies and fatigue. I was told that it
was in my head,,,, pardon the pun. I am so
glad I am not alone and I can't believe I
actually saw these posts. I have been
searching for 2 years now on what this
could be. It is only in 1 ear and it gets
so loud that I actually have hearing
difficulty out of that ear. Has anyone
been able to stop it? Mine actually went
away for a few months, but I ended up with
SEVERE Vertigo and now it is back. I
don't believe it is just in my head, I
think there is really something wrong. I
am unable to turn my head certain ways,
because of the vertigo and my balance is
really off and I really believe it is
because of this swooshing in my ear. When
it was gone for those few short months I
did not have a balance problem or the
vertigo.
Can anyone give me suggestions????

Hello everyone,
I too recently started hearing the
"whooshing" sound in my left ear which is
very annoying. I was beginning to believe
that it was something that was normal yet
aggravating. No one in my family had any
idea what I was trying to explain to them
which made it even more frustrating. I am
going to go in to see my neurologist in a
few days so maybe she can help. I also
have a vns implant that I thought could be
my problem (which I don't think is the
problem anymore). I am glad to see that I
am not alone. Thank you all and good
luck.

a Potential Cure Posted: 06-11-07 11:17am
I have had a similar problem to what is
described above for over two years. I hear
my heartbeat in my right ear all day every
day, at varying volumes but it is always
present. Pressing on the artery does help
in my case. This weekend I moved from an
apartment to a house and the dust made my
allergies act up so I started taking
Zyrtec (a prescription for seasonal
allergies) on Saturday. Sunday night I was
sitting in a quiet room and realized the
sound is gone. It is now Monday at noon
and I have not heard it since. I took 10
mgs of Zyrtec each morning. I always
believed this was a vascular problem and
not related to sinus or allergies because
the ENT told me that it was probably
because of blood pressure even though my
blood pressure is generally very low. I'm
not sure if it actually is an allergy that
causes the noise and the Zyrtec is
treating the allergy or if the cure is
just an unintended side effect of the
medication, but it works. I can't believe
it, it has been over two years and all of
a sudden I can enjoy silence. I'll check
back in a week and let everyone know if it
continues to work. If you have this
condition, you know how frustrating it is
and I recommend that everyone tries the
Zyrtec (or maybe another allergy med) to
see if it can help you too. Good luck.

Tinitus - Pulse In Ear Posted: 07-02-07 13:55pm
I have the Pulse Noise or "BRUIT" in my
left ear. I have had this for 20+ years. I
deal with it by running a Fan in my room
or using a "WHITE NOISE" machine that you
can buy that replicates various constant
background noises. This also has a timer
that turns off after 1 hour to save power.
The cause of my Ear Noise is a Dural
Arteriovenous Malformation or AVM. These can be
further researched on the WEB. Mine
specifically is referred to as a Dural AVM
Fistula. Not everyone has this severe of a
problem, but a CT Scan can quickly rule
this out.

Loud Heart Beat In Ear Posted: 07-13-07 20:37pm
Hi, just read your post. I have the same
problem. When I first went to the ENT it
was because there was fluid causing that
soud you get when you have water in your
ears, I also had some hearing loss. The
ENT pierced my eardrum and used suction to
remove the "gunk". The problem didn't go
away, so the next step was a myringotomy
(I had a tube inserted in the eardrum of
my left ear. The pulse sound is just as
bad 4 weeks after surgery, so now my ENT
is going to schedule me for an MRI to see
if she can find the cause. I don't know
if anything can be done though.
