Heartbeat In Left Ear--please Read Posted: 01-27-05 01:11am
Hello, my name is ronni.
I have a condition known as pulsatile
tinnitus. Any number of things can
cause it, and it is not common. (as I
have found that no cases are reported even
in this forum!) it is my hope that someone
will come looking , and may be able to
give advice---i have yet to find out what
causes my pt, but I have lived with it for
a year now. I invite anyone
interested to respond to this message, and
I will give details of my experience.
I will have to keep this brief because my
sp tends to cut me off--
to describe: pulsatile tinnitus is a
sensation/audible pulse heard in one or
both ears; sound of heart-beat in ear,
especially at night or when under stress
or exertion; causes are numerous, but most
commonly seem to be related to
sinus/middle ear problems (pressure in my
case);also with high blood pressure, a
"narrowing" of the carotid artery, or vein
running too close to ear-drum. Less
common, but still worrisome is a "glomous"
or benign tumor growing on the auditory
nerve.
In my case, I saw an ent many months ago,
with very little information about pt.
I am uninsured, and as he said, without an
mri, none of the above causes can be ruled
out. So he gave me a steroid shot and
flonase and pronounced me cured. Guess
what? It's back, and worse than
ever!
If anyone is experiencing similar
symptoms, or has any suggestions about
alternative methods of treating this
confounding condition (such as acupuncture
and/or herbal treatments) I would be most
appreciative. Just to commisserate
with someone or "brainstorm" about
possible causes would do me fine.
Thanks for listening. (i'm glad I
still can!)
peace, out- ronni

Hey everybody,
i am having the same problem. It just
started a few weeks ago. I am prone to
sinus infections and I am under a little
stress due to fathering a newborn last
week.
This is the first i've heard of it. I
just did a search for
"medical+heartbeat+ear".
If you have any links that might be
helpful for me to read up on this
condition, I would really appreciate it.

This condition can be the result of toxic
effects of certain antibiotics or
chemotherapy, heavy exposure to carbon
monoxide or heavy metals - even too much
aspirin. It can be exaccerbated by too
much caffeine.
Another consideration is food
sensitivites. Susceptible people may be
sensitive to foods that contain
salicylates, such as almonds, apples,
berries, cherries,grapes, cucumbers,
peaches, pickles, plums, raisins, tomatoes
etc.
Cordyceps extract is sometimes helpful
when there is a fluid accumulation.
A good tcm (traditional chinese
medicine)practitioner can usually help.

Heartbeat In Ear Posted: 10-12-05 01:50am
This thread is a bit old but i'd like to
add my experience.
I have been getting the sensation of my
heartbeat in my ear more frequently for
the past two weeks. It does not pulse in
time with my heart so i'm sure it's not my
actual heartbeat.
It's more annoying than a concern but it
adds to my overall anxiety as i've been
trying to deal with an irregular
heartbeat. I have extra heartbeats and
it becomes quite distracting as I can feel
the extra heartbeats through my skin right
at my heart. I suffer from slight
hypertension so I take a low dose of
atacan.
All in all, I am a healthy person but I
can't help catastrophizing that all these
symptoms add up to some ominous. I guess
it is something that I need to learn how
to cope with although my mind gets the
better of me more often than not.
All the best to anyone else struggling
with their own situation.

Heartbeat In Ear Posted: 10-13-05 12:54pm
Hello,
i have experienced this for a few years.
It has gotten worse in the last few weeks.
In addition to the usual heartbeat sound
(in my right ear only) which comes and
goes and usually lasts about 24 hours, I
have recently started hearing a popping or
tapping sound not related to my heart
rhythm. I have been to my gp who has now
referred me to an ent. From what I can
tell from various websites (google
pulsatile tinnitus and you will find lots
of info) there are many physiological
causes of this, and some sort of scan (mri
or ct) should be used to rule out any
vascular abnormalities or tumours. I am
worried that they will find something but
at least it will be an explanation for
this troublesome condition. I am also
worried that nothing will show up because
on one of the websites it states:
"it is our sincere hope that everyone who
experiences pulsating tinnitus will pursue
a thorough medical evaluation to locate
the cause, if possible. There is a lot of
research and reports about methods for
repairing the problems that create the
disturbing symptoms of pulsitile tinnitus.
At the same time, there are many cases of
pulsitile tinnitus which are not
pinpointed, and these tend to fall into
the idiopathic category (meaning unknown
causes). Individuals with pulsitile
tinnitus who find that the initial imaging
results do not reveal abnormalities should
insist on further examination and
investigation. It is apparently possible
to misread or miss these pulsitile
tinnitus trouble spots that may be tangled
in other structures or hidden by bone or
other tissue. Newer techniques regarding
pulsitile tinnitus have been employed that
help determine the site of lesion in the
majority of pulsitile tinnitus cases. The
cure rates for pulsitile tinnitus are
quite high, once the problem area has been
identified."

Found Relief From Swooshing, Pressure Heartbeat In Ear Posted: 10-14-05 21:59pm
I have dealt with such a thing for 2-3
years now(of a on), and have found
relief!!!
I have asthma and allergies for a very
long time, and even though I may not be
sick or have a stuufy nose, my head is
still congested. I didn't really know
that it was congestion, but I couldn't
comprehend and concentrate as well as I
used to and my ear swhooshed like a
heartbeat (it reminded of what I heard
when I had an ear infection one time when
I was 21) but I did not have an ear
infection or high blood pressure. I
eventually tied walmart's brand
decongestant extended release, and the
next day, I was able to get up early in
the morning and be very awake, my mind was
clear to the point that I had not realized
I had been living in such a fog. I am an
intelligent person, but I surely had not
been acting it the past year or so. I
decided to take them daily-it gives you
awesome cotton mouth! But I felt so
great. I'd trade for that for clarity and
no more whooshing. It's just not the
whooshing, but the pressure also. Now, I
also have a special eye problem in which I
see a unique specialist who also does
homeopathic meds and accupuncture. She
was concerned over long-term effects from
the decongestants so she recommended a
daily chinese herb. And it works!! So
now I have found relief and it is decent
for my body! The name of it is "er chen
wan". I usually get my bottles from her,
but you can also find them on the web.
Just put a search for chinese herbs or the
actual name of it, and you will be able to
take your pick from which company to order
from. They are tiny dark pellet-looking
pills and the box recommends you take 8
pills 3x's a day, but my dr said 4 pills
2x's a day and that has worked. Because
it is an herb for helping your body, it
takes it a couple of weeks to infiltrate
your system, but once it is there and you
stop taking it for any reason, it usually
takes only a few days to get total relief
again.
I hope that this helps you, I know what it
is like to have such an ailment and how it
affects your life.

Heartbeat In Your Ears Huh! Posted: 11-03-05 18:35pm
This is not funny and should be taken
seriously. The reason why you hear a
heartbeat in your ears, some what like a
pulse sound is because you were probably
chipped when you wher a small child by
vaccines, flu shots, surgery's etc... Yes
the type of chip they put on sexual
predators.
This is not a lie. If you haven't had no
head trauma chances are your are chip.
The chip is harmfull...
You can disable their mind control effects
with a combination of herbal plants or a
rare earth magnet. 70cents each,.
I have tmj and grind at night, but this
ear thing is new in the last 2 years. It
doesn't seem related to stress or
caffeine- I usually have neither, but I
wonder if it's b/c I sometimes use q-tips
in my ears b/c the only solution ive found
is ear candles. It doesn't stay gone
forever, but for 4-6 months usually. Pay
someone or have someone help if candleing
is new for you. How many of you are
scuba divers or live or travel to high
altitudes? B/c sometimes it will go away
temporarily just by popping my ears. ???
Good luck.... Especially you agent

Benign Positional Vertigo - Treatment Worked Posted: 11-26-05 08:17am
I went to a neurologist and was diagnosed
with a simple condition called benign
positional vertigo. This condition is
related to fragments of bone chips that
flake in your ear and cause dizziness and
other complications. There is a easy
cure for it that has worked for me. I
had the heartbeat in my right ear for two
weeks and it went away in one day after
following the prescribed procedure called
an epley manuever. It is worth
researching and trying. You can find
the information about this condition on
hosppract.Com...Search past articles for
positional vertigo and it should take you
to the first article on the varieties of
vertigo by robert baloh, u of california.
If you scroll down the article it will
show the epley manuever. Looks
complicated at first but it's easy to do
at home.
This sounds too good to be true, but it
has worked repeatedly for my vertigo and
recently heartbeat sound in ears.
Good luck!

Heartbeat In Ear Posted: 01-25-06 13:19pm
I also have been hearing my heartbeat in
my left ear, it sounds like a
swoosh-swoosh. It started when I was
about 6 months pregnant, I am now three
months post pardum and it is still here.
Lately it has been louder and driving me
mad, so I went to a neurologist who is
doing a work-up for a carotid
artery-cavernous sinus fistula ( it sounds
very scary!) it is not usually life
threatening, although vision loss can
occur. Often the eye on that side will
be red and gunky. It occurs mostly in
middle aged women (i am only 26) or after
head traumas. So, for now we are doing
an mri/mra and if that doesn't show
anything (it is often hard to see) then we
will do an angiogram of those vessels. I
am a bit nervous, especially because of
the fact that I have a new baby.
Hopefully we will figure it out.
Hope this helps.

I Also Hear My Heartbeat In My Left Ear Posted: 01-28-06 14:42pm
Hi all,
i also ave the very annoying problem with
hearing my heartbeat in my left ear. It
is constant and I have been suffering for
about a year now. I have only just got
referred to an ent specialist and one of
my doctirs even had the nerve to tell me
that my problem is normal, i'd like her t
have this problem and tell me that it is
normal. I frequently get times when I
get up from a resting position where I can
hear nothing but loud banging in my ear it
does eventally get better but is always
there. As I am sitting here now I can
hear my heart beat, even with the tele on.
I also find it is affecting my hearing.
I really hope I can fin the cause of this
once I finally see the ent specialist.
It was a relief to know that others are
suffering from this problem as I thought I
was going mad.
Atima.

I have has this before as well and it can
be very annoying. I finally went to an
herbalist and a nutritionist and found out
it was built up toxins in my body. So I
had to do a purifying and detoxifying
program. It was the best thing I have
done, it is amazing how much toxins we
have in our body from enviroment and our
food. I hope this helps you, you can find
an herbalist on line!

Heartbeat In Left Ear Posted: 02-16-06 20:09pm
I am soo glad to know that I am not the
only one suffering from this troubling
problem. I have had this problem since I
was a child. When I move from sitting to
lying; sitting to standing position; etc
my ear swishes and I can feel the heart
beat in my ear. I am now 34 years old
and 6 months pregnant with my first child.
I am sooo scared now that I have a
circulation problem in myarteries/veins or
have a brain tumor/aneurysm or something.
This problem has gotten even worse with
my pregnancy and I am now having throbbing
in my head as well with this when I stand
up. I have told my family doctor and she
looks at me like i'm crazy when I describe
this to her. I have seen an ent and he
onlyplaced a stethescope to my neck. I
am afraid that I have a terminal illness
and won't live to see my child grow.
However; I have had this problem all of my
life...If it was an aneurysm it probably
would have burst by now. Perhaps blocked
artery. After the baby is born I am
going to demand that my physician perform
mri or angiogram on my or something. Any
medical advice out there?????Please

Heartbeat In Left Ear... Posted: 02-16-06 21:17pm
I went on line to see if there was
anything out there on this subject, not
really expecting to find so much of you
suffer the same thing! I have had this
happening off and on for a couple of
years, and tried not to focus on it much.
However, lately it has become constant
and very annoying. Actually I can hear it
now, while I am writing this., usually I
would mostly hear it at night in bed, when
it was very quiet. I work for a
pediatrician and asked about it, and it is
not uncommon to hear it once in a
while..
She did point out that if it is constant,
then it is wise to look into the reason
that could be causing it. I have yet to
contact a specialist, but my main concern
is that it is a serious blockage of some
sort. I am just so amazed at the number
of people with the same problem and plan
to look into it soon. I'm having a
difficult time trying to sleep now, I feel
it is so loud that my husband must be able
to hear it. Has anyone found a temporary
way to silence this - any home remedy,
etc.. Until I get to the doctor? Any
suggestions welcome - thanks, linda

It amazes me how many postings I found
today as compared to three years ago when
my pulsitle tinitis started in my right
ear . I thought I would check the web
again for any info on heartbeat (hb) in
ear because it kept me up last night and
i'm so frustrated I could scream. It's
gotten louder and more annoying. I can
hear it almost always and more so in
certain positions. It's a thorn in my
side.
Anyway, I wanted to share with you some
things i've experienced. I have great
insurance and have had many tests. Here
is what I have found.
Tests i've had within a year of jan 2005
carotid arteries scan
mrv
mra
mri
cat scan
artiorgram (like an angiogram, but in your
brain)
results: everything is normal. Back to
screaming! I should mention, I had the
artiorgram because the mra indicated a
possible blood clot. After prayer the
atriorgram was clear.
(general) possible causes:
- high blood pressure
- blockage or narrowing of carotid
arteries
- tumor in the your ear area
- calcium deposits on a thin bone in the
ear ...Can't remember the name of it but
can be easily corrected
- anorysm
(specific to me that I think could have
contributed) possible causes:
- severe head injury when I was 5 yrs, 16
yrs & 18 yrs. 5 yrs was more severe
and to my forehead, the others were less
with a broken nose and fractured check.
- pre-hb I drank a protein drink daily for
at least a year.
- three years ago, I had some pain in my
ear to the touch, so I tugged on my
earlobe and heard it pop - it eased the
pain. The next time I tugged a little
more and it again popped and eased the
pain. Maybe I tore some tissue or
dislocated a vain or caused it to lodge
closer to my eardrum. At the time I
didn't think anything of it. I just
remembered about this incident and will
tell my doctor next week when I see him.
- pre-hb I had two root canals, both on
the same side that I hear the hb
- I am addicted to afrin (i couldn't
breathe after the broken nose) and must
use it several times a day and have since
I was 20 yrs old, I am now 53.
- pre-hb I saw a chiropractor regularly
who adjusted my neck
- I started hrt activila a year earlier
and decided to ween off right around the
same time the hb started
- I was on an celexa for eight months and
weaned off a few months before
- I take blood pressure meds;benicar 20mg
& toprol xl 25 mg
i'm scheduled for another mri next week
because my new neurologist would like to
focus on the ear area. I should mention
that two weeks ago I had an ana test for
lupus and it was positive. This just
means one step in the lengthy process of
truly diagnosing it as positive, so not
confirmed that I do have it yet. If so,
I could be experiencing some neurological
effects, but i'm standing steadfast that I
don't!
One last thing, it helps to stuff cotton
in your ear to lessen the sound. That
was the only way I finally fell asleep
last night.
If you have any of the above specific
possible causes in common with me, please
let me know.

Swooshing In Ear Posted: 03-12-06 22:56pm
I also experienced the swooshing or
heartbeat on my left ear and over 9 years
ago, doctors told me it was a glomous
tumor and I needed surgery soon. It was
diagnosed quite accidentally. In fact,
my regular doctor thought it was just
water in my ear and was causing an
infection because he could see some
redness inside. What he was seeing was
the tumor full of blood which is what the
swooshing sound was. These tumors find
blood supplies and erode whatever gets in
its way. Which is what makes them
dangerous if not caught. It left me with
a closed ear canal, loss of hearing in
that ear, some facial paralysis due to the
tumor spreading to my facial nerves, but I
am alive. I have yearly mris and this
past january did have an abnormal one.
The ent did see something but not sure
what it is. I will be seeing him in a
few months for another scan.

Re: Heartbeat In Left Ear--please Read Posted: 04-12-06 19:21pm
Hi ronni and everyone else who posted on
this topic:
thank you!! I have the same, terribly
annoying condition. I do believe it is
related to conscience & un-conscience
anxiety and stress. I have had vertigo
attacks from age 10-19, and then recently,
at age 30. I am a healthy 30 year-old
female, with normal blood pressure and all
vitals, in good shape. 7 years ago, I did
have extensive sinus surgery, and I must
take claritan every day, or I can't
function.
However - what I did find is that when I
take some time to meditate, deep breath,
and relax, this symptom seems to go away.
After reading the posts, I tried applying
pressure on my left neck, right below the
ear of which the annoying, deafening
heartbeat sounds takes place. It helps
for the moment. Going to the
chiropractor, helps also.
If you can't afford health insurance or
don't have it, I would highly recommend
daily meditation. This has helped me
tremendously, as I am also an anxiety
sufferer. I used to be on a cocktail of
anti-anxiety medications, but nothing
worked. Until I begain daily meditation,
and an honest approach to how I was/am
feeling.
I am willing to try anything, and these
are some of the things that have worked
for me.
If you suffer with this condition - you
have my sympathy. Try to relax, and allow
it to dissipate on its own.
I have a condition known as pulsatile
