Anyone With This Insurance Company?? Posted: 02-01-05 16:30pm
Hi everyone,
i am in need of health insurance. I have
been researching some company's and I
recently submitted a request for a quote
online. I was reached by a rep on my
cell phone. The company is called
shplans.Com and they claim that their
parent company is protective life
corporation. The following is the break
down of some of the benefits that she
stated over the phone:
60% discount on doctor visits
45% discount on prescription and for an
additional $29.00 per month, this can be
raised to 80% discount on prescrips.
$100 copay on er visits and 100% discount
there after.
All claims are handled through whats
called patient advocacy reps... (???)
the processing fee to sign up is $100
the premiums are $120 a month.
She said I can be covered in about an hour
following the receipt of payment.
The plan also includes life insurance for
up to $10,000
she also said it includes vision, and
dental discounts.
Does this seem legitimate?
The rep just seems to eager to sign me up.
I dont know if this is a legit plan or
what.....
The strange this is that she mentioned
that they also cover pre-existing
conditions?!?!
Also, she said that doc visits are
normally $60-$80 and that my payment
therefore wont be large :| plus, she says
that if additional lab tests are
conducted, such as cultures, and blood
tests, the patient advocate would
negotiate with the doc to get the best
rate for me. Lol
to top it off, I asked her for an
information packet and she replied that
they dont give out info until I sign up
(ie. Fork over the cash). She explained
that they do this in order to minimize
business costs... :s
lastly, she says they are located in
florida and dont have local offices in
pittsburgh.
I would like to get some feedback before
proceeding with this.....
I am also using the ehealthinsurance.Com
and found the aetna hmo plans to be more
legit....
Thank you all in advance for your kind
replies...

:) I just signed on here; looking for
affordable health insurance since I got
laid off and noticed your question right
off. I too have someone calling me about
this plan. Did you get any response to
your inquiry? I really don't want to pay
money for something I cannot get paper
work to look at first. They can say
anything over the phone! Did you get any
replies regarding the legitimacy of this
insurance? Thanks

Discount plans have the possiblity of
being a good choice. Just keep in mind
that there probably aren't going to be
many doctors that will accept the plan and
you'll still wind up paying full price.
Your best bet is to go with an actual
insurance company. I'm not sure what
exactly is offered in your area, but i've
been in your position in the past and have
used bluecross blueshield and humana.
Both were excellent.

I too received a call from someone from
this outfit.
I had him explain all the coverage, but it
sounded too good to be true.
When I asked him to send me something in
writing, he said I should look it up on
the internet. He became very indignent
and hung up on me. This made me more
convinced it is not legit.
When I looked up hsplans.Com in google, it
brought up this website, but nothing for
(selective health plans) shplans!
Does anyone reading these posts actually
have this insurance? If so, what do you
think of it?
Oh, I am going to call the florida
insurance commission's consumer helpline
to see if they are aware of sh plans.
I recently bought into one of these same
type of plans. It was introduced to me as
health insurance when it really isn't.
The prescription part, which was supposed
to be a $10/20/40 ended up not being
legit. It only saved $3-$4 off on each
one. The doctors had never heard of it
and I am in the process of trying to get
my money back. The sign-up fee is
non-refundable, so that is just gone.
The company also changed names within two
weeks of signing up. It isn't the same
name you posted, but sounds like the exact
same plan.
I am just trying to help you keep from
getting taken like I did.

Very interesting...I recently responded to
a healthplan questionaire online and was
immediately contacted by this same company
(sh plans). I took down the info over the
phone (it all matches with the topic
post); I told them I would get back to
them. When I did a search of their
company name, I got this link , among
others. Glad I found this site.....Their
legitimacy sounds kinda doubtful--seems
they cover just about everything from
medical, dental, life, etc., for a low
monthly premium---yeah right! I'll pass
on this one.
Just because they say they cover just
about everything doesn't mean they do.
You have to read the fine print. They
will get a discounted rate negotiated for
you at hospitals, but you have to pay the
full remaining balance within 30 days for
it to count.

Discount plans are illegal in some states,
regulated in others, and the wild west in
most.
They are not insurance and are not a
subsitute for insurance. I can probably
count on one hand the number of times
someone should take a discount plan when
insurance is not available.
If you can qualify for health insurance,
even a $5k deductible is a better
option.
Most of the discount plans charge a $100
fee, non-refundable and fully
commissionable to the rep. Even if you
cancel the plan during the first few days
your $100 is gone and in the reps
pocket.
The discounts only apply if you have the
ability to pay when billed. If you dont
have the cash to pay, there are no
discounts. Many providers will no longer
recognize the plans because the people
toting them around in their wallet cannot
afford to pay for services.
When someone calls pitching one of these
plans, hang up.

I agree with somarco.
Run, do not walk, away from this scam.
These scams are slowly being shut down in
most states.

So glad I found this site. Found it a
little strange that I could not get
anything in writiing until after I forked
over the $100. This is the second
discount program i'v looked into and they
all pretty much operate the same way.
Lots of promises, very little specific
info. Thought it was just me being overly
suspicious. Glad to know others came to
the same conclusion. Stay away.
