Help - Healthy Young Fit Husband W/seriously High Cholestero Posted: 02-02-05 08:36am
I encouraged my husband to get his
cholesterol checked at his last physical
for the first time. Mine is insanely low
at 140, i've had it tested many times in
my life. He got his results back - 248!
His hdl was 91 but his ldl was much
higher. Oddly enough, his triglycerides
were low, in the 90's as well.
I don't understand how can this be. First
off, he is more fit than I am, much more
fit. Runs marathons, isn't overweight (i
am by about 10 pounds) and he's only 35.
We both eat the same foods - all
supposedly good for cholesterol levels.
We only use olive oil in the house, never
eat red meat, drink a glass of red wine
maybe 2 times a week, lots of vegetables,
fiber and low-fat choices. Plenty of high
quality low-fat protein in the form of
chicken, turkey, salmon or mahi mahi.
So everything the doctor "recommended" on
the notes forms of my husband's test we're
already doing. We've been doing for
years. His parents have normal
cholesterol levels.
is it
possible - the only thing we can
think is that even though my husband
fasted starting the night before his
cholesterol test, we were in new orleans
and ate terribly for the 5 days before
that. We always eat so healthy when we're
at home that when we're on vacation we cut
loose. Beignets, beer, gumbo, jambalaya,
muffuletta, he had it all - 3 meals a day.
Would that jack up his cholesterol
"artificially"?
I'm stumped and worried for him. This is
the first time he's ever been "unhealthy".
His dad had a heart attack 5 years ago
and i'm scared he's headed for that, in
spite of his great fitness and health
habits.
Thank you - catherine

It's a good chance that the 5 days in new
orleans could have upped his cholesterol.
I know several of those dishes have
shrimp and shrimp are loaded with
cholesterol. It may have not gone out
of his system yet.
I would also not be terribly concerned
with the numbers if he is in good shape
and healthy. Especially since he has
good hdl numbers. Was his dad healthy?
In my family high cholesterol is the norm
(mine was 241 last year and I am 26).
But no one has had heart problems from it.
I am convinced that cholesterol alone
cannot give you a heart attack.
I would get him to get re-tested in a few
months to see if things have changed and
go from there.

Hi there...I too would suggest a retest in
a month or two and see what it looks like
then.
The other suggestion that I have for you
is "eat right 4 your blood type"
it is amazing when you look into it,
because all the things that you think you
are doing right, may actually not be great
based on your blood type. (but maybe they
are) it is worth a look.
Whatever you do, don't let the Dr. Put
your husband on a statin drug!!
Contact me first to get more information
on things that can lower you cholesterol
naturally.
Also, did you know that it is very
important to take antioxidents especially
if you exercise regularly...When we
exercise, our bodies create more free
redicals that can cause cell mutation and
lead to a host of other issues.
To find out more...Let me know or email

Prescription Meds Can Kill Posted: 06-02-05 23:26pm
Hi catherine
put simply...Prescription medications can
kill you. Don't be too alarmed because
there are lots of natural ways to lower
cholesterol.
There are many natural
alternatives/supplements that can help to
lower cholesterol. Some of these are
reportedly more effective in lowering
cholesterol than prescription medications,
without the dangerous side effects
these include: guggul, policosanol, red
yeast rice, pantethine etc. In addition
there are at least another 30 natural
supplements that can help to lower
cholesterol. Hope that helps.
I've read a lot of interesting things and
i'd like to share my experience with
everyone. I haven't tried any methods of
reducing cholesterol but ....Adkins
cholesterol diet
this method has helped and it's 3 years
that i've not been worrying about my
cholesterol level.

I know the original person that posted
here may not see tis but it is worth
knowing that your husband should be
fasting for a minimum of 12 hours prior to
the test being done. That will give an
accurate reading for cholesterol and
tiglycerides.
The good news is that even though my
readings were 290 cholesterol and 555 tri,
I took vytorin 10/20 and tri-cor 145 for 6
months and I am now no longer in need of
either.

I've posted this on a couple other forums,
but it's important info. I apologize in
advance if you've already seen this. Not
trying to spam, just trying to get
important info out to the public.
Here's the thing most people do not know.
High cholesterol is not related to heart
disease. About 50% of people dying from
heart disease have "normal" levels of
cholesterol. What you need to be
concerned about are your homocysteine
levels. You can get some good info at http://www.Homocysteine.Net/.
But here's an analogy. Imagine your
cholesterol is actually a yellow balloon.
And let's say you take this balloon and
rub it on your head to create static
electricity. You may have done this as a
kid. Then you take the balloon and stick
it to the wall. Now imagine doing the
same thing with several balloons and
putting them around a door. Eventually
it would be hard getting through the door.
Same thing is happening inside your
arteries. Cholesterol cells are getting
charged up and sticking to the walls of
your arteries until it gets to the point
where it's difficult to get through.
And how does your cholesterol get
"charged"? It becomes oxidized. A
homocysteine test will check your level of
oxidized cholesterol. Odds are you've
never even heard of homocysteine. You
can ask your doctor about this test, but
he may not have heard about it either.
The main reason is because there is no
drug to lower homocysteine levels.
However, if you take an anti-oxidant, this
will cause the cells to loose their charge
and, like our balloon, will fall off the
wall.
I actually have a cd of a presentation
given by a doctor who talks about this
very thing. If you are interested in
getting a copy, i'd be happy to send it to
you at no charge. It's about 70min long
and the presentation covers several
aspects of supplementation with
anti-oxidants. Send me an email with
your address and i'll get it out to you.
You'll learn some very interesting things.
