Is My Wife Bipolar?
Posted: 02-03-05 13:07pm

My wife is showing all of the symptoms of being in a manic state (euphoria, very talkative, grandiosity), but there are a couple of things that make me wonder. She isn't spending a lot of money. She is starting to travel a lot, though (about one trip per month), but she is trying to keep the cost down as much as possible. In hindsight she has had severe ups and downs for years. She takes paxil for depression. I have suggested that she be evaluated for bipolar disorder, but she refuses. The other thing that makes me not so certain that she is bipolar is that even when she is in what definitely appears to be a manic state, there are times (a few hours) when she seems normal (doesn't talk too much, etc.).

My main question is can a bipolar person who is in the middle of a manic episode seem normal at times? I'm confused.

Well,

first of all you are the person who sees while you are living with this person what she cannot see. Some of your insights are valid to one of the types of bipolar disorder but I am not a therapist or a doctor. I am a woman who went through marriage as if nothing was wrong. Everybody else was being difficult, it wasn't me...I was in denial and uneducated. My husband, sister, and my mother even had a meeting to discuss what was happening with me as I appreared to be struggling. I had no idea about this meeting and no action came of it. The type of man my husband is it was easier to be in denial or let my family fix me but he chose to do nothing.

Second I have not found any tests you can take to discover if you are bipolar.

The best way is to seek treatement
1. In-patient through a psyc hospital program
2. Out patient through a therapist who can then reccomend in-patient
evaluation

caution

you cannot do this to/for your wife she has to seek help for herself.

Just some honest feedback. Good luck, ruby

Phaze and ruby, hello ruby, you are contradicting yourself again with the advise you have given here...So your husband choice was to ignore and you find fault? Would you of listened? If you were not ready to accept your illness then are you saying it was his fault he ignored it? To phaze: I believe people in a manic state can act quit normal for short periods of time but soon it comes right back. The extreme difference in behavior is a dead give-away. I am not a doctor either just a wife of a man who has bipolar. He has made the choice to under-medicate, self medicate and live on the high side....His choice; I left, I choose to ignore it till he is ready to admit it.
