Treatment For Meneire's Disease
Posted: 02-03-05 17:11pm

Hi all -

my mom has visited several doctors lately after losing her hearing suddenly about two months ago. She also has what seems like pretty bad tinnitus.

She went to shea ear clinic in memphis this week and was diagnosed with stage I meniere's disease. The doctor's there recommended a dexamethasone perfusion, which I guess is where they'll inject some type of steroid into her ear drums through an incision each day for three days.

She is pretty upset and worried this procedure could make the condition even worse. I've read only a few comments on the internet about this procedure, and its seems to be split evenly between people who improved and those who didn't. Since the diagnosis is so early, i've tried to tell her she probably has a better chance of having some success than someone with advance meniere's disease.

She's become so worried that she's considering canceling the procedure and just dealing with the advancing stages as they come. Am I wrong to encourage her to go ahead with this procedure in hopes that it can be treated before it gets worse, or should I back off?

I would appreciate any info about this procedure...She's been so depressed lately with the idea that she'll have constant ringing and dizziness for the rest of her life...She really needs something to hope for but I have no idea how to help her, and I hate seeing her suffer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
