Hey everyone...So I had my check-up about
two weeks ago, and just got a call that
said I had a "slightly abnormal pap test".
I have to go back in 6 months to get it
re-done. What exactly does this mean?
Do I now have hpv? I'm really
scared...

Not hpv. I'm sure they would want you to
come in earlier to have it treated.

I know a few girls this has happened to..
Usually when they want you to retake a pap
test its because the initial test was
inconclusive... (possibly contaminated)..
So they need to re-do the test. No need
to worry.

Well, the nurse actually said that my
results were "slightly abnormal", not that
the test was inconclusive. She said that
the symptoms usually clear themselves up,
but when I asked if it meant that I have
hpv, she said she wasn't sure. She said
it didn't say so on my chart, but that
she'd ask my doctor and call me back, and
she never called back :(

When they do a pap they're checking for
dysplasia, or abnormal cells, which could
become precancerous. The sample they
took could've been contaminated, or not
enough cells to get a definitive reading,
etc. It doesn't mean you necessarily
have hpv. If your repeat comes back
abnormal they will most likely proceed to
a colposcopy where under a really high
powered colposcope and take a larger
tissue sample to be tested. The best
thing to do is go in for a repeat pap and
take it from there. Don't worry about it
too much!!

And even if you did have hpv it really is
not that bad if you stay on top of things,
like get checked every 6 months and have
protected sex. If you have years and
years without getting a paps then it might
develope into cancer but not all hpv
carriers develope cancer. It depends on
tje person. With some people it will go
away alone a nd other with treatment. I
have had it for 3 years now and I am ok.
I just take care of myself. Also if you
are a somker the chances of getting
cervical cancer increases. Take care of
yourself and do whatever the doctor tells
you to do.

My mom got called back for her results a
little while ago. They sent her a letter
in the mail saying that there was
"abnormal results" but they wanted her
back the next month (which was this
month).. Now she has to wait til april to
find out what, if anything, is the
problem.
Contamination is common with pap tests
apparently. They check for abnormal
cells, do they not? (i haven't had one
before)
a lot of things can cause changes though,
sometimes it can be hormone levels. I
thought that what was wrong with my mom,
cause she's on hormones for menopause, but
the doctor said her's wouldn't affect it.
Anyway, I really do think if they're
making you wait 6 more months, then it
can't be something serious. I think its'
ridiculous to wait that long thoughg,
because you're going to worry about it and
be stressed.. Like right now.
Maybe you should phone your doctor and
demand to go in. Put your foot down!
It must be scary though, i'm sorry for
your stress.
Yuckiness.

You really need to go back to the
doc!!!!!!!!!!!!! It makes me so mad the
nurse said she didn't know if it was hpv,
but to get rechecked in 6 months.
When your pap is slightly abnormal due
precancerous cells, hpv, dysplasia etc.
They need to do a colposcopy and biopsies.
Mine just came back abnormal and I have
waited three months to see a specialist do
get the colposcopy. Then if you have
dysplasia they will most likely give you a
leep (burn out the abnormal cells), freeze
them out or use a lazer. Or, they will
just check you every six months to see if
it goes away on its own. But, in order to
just recheck you every six months they
have to check you first! Demand further
testing!

I know. It's so frustrating, and it has
been in the back of my mind since then.
Both my mom and my sister have hpv, and
i'm the only one without it. My doctor
was supposed to call me back and let me
know if my chart said that I had hpv
(because the nurse said that she didn't
think I did), but she hasn't called.
I've been having sex sans condom, with my
boyfriend (we are eachother's first
partners) for about a year now (i'm on the
pill, and have been for about three
years), so that is my main concern. If I
infected him, I would feel aweful, even
though I know it has little effect on men.
The doctors told me to come back in 6
months (i got a letter in the mail too),
to get another pap done, and that if it
came back abnormal again, that I would
have to get a colposcopy. My sister has
had several of those, and recently had the
leep procedure done. She's a smoker. I
am definitely not. Anyways, thank you
guys so much for your support and
understanding. It means a lot to have
some people who understand where i'm
coming from. I'll keep you posted.

Yes it would be awful to infect your
partner. But at the same time, he could
have been the one that infected you. You
can't know because there is no test for
men and unless you were both virgins when
you met, you can't tell who infected who.
And you can have hpv for years before it
shows up in your pap. And, scarily
enough, you can get it and spread it with
condoms just as you can without.
I guess if the doctor says to wait six
months then ok, but I would really push
for the colposcopy now. And if they
haven't called you back then call them.
Who cares if they get annoyed this is your
life and your body!
I hope it isn't hpv, but if it is, it will
be alright. Your boyfriend will be a
carrier, but it could be a lot worse.
And it very rarely affects men, but it can
lead to cancer in the penis. And make
sure you don't have anal sex because you
can get colon cancer also. Because you
don't get tests like pap smears in you
butt (for lack of better explaining) the
hpv pre-cancerous cells can lead to cancer
and you wont know until it is too late.
So, whatever happens good luck!
