Do Not Worry About Your Memory Problem Posted: 12-02-07 00:10am
I believe that I had memory problem since
I was a kid (I might have had seizures
when I was a kid). I tried not to remember
things. I am not able to remember my
closely worked collegue's name.
I am now 45 years old with a good job. I
had a high education (straight A student).
do not panic if you can not remember
wow!!! story of my life! my grades have
dropped and i do indeed feel stupider. i
have began to stop in the middle of
sentences, forgetting what i was talking
about and having to ask the person what i
was talking about, or just taking long
breaks while my attention catches to
something else! absolutely horrible!

Hi I'm Angela. I got diagnosed at age of
20 with having grand mal seizures
(although the more research I do the more
I believe I have had this problem since I
was little). The medicine I got on was
Lamictal and slowed my thought process
down so much people started thinking I had
brain damage. When I spoke with my neuro
about it he said it's what the medicine
does and what all other meds would likely
do as well. After my insurance ran out
and not being able to pay $400 a month for
a months worth of pills I stopped taking
it. I continue to have episodes but they
were always contained to night until
recently I've been told of doing strange
things while at work and I have no
recollection. I want to get back on my
medicine to stop them but I'd also like to
get a degree which I know would be
impossible if on it again. There's this
brick wall in my head that I have to knock
down in order to learn anything new (even
not on the medicine) and the school I just
recently started is overwhelming me to the
point I want to quit. It's so frustrating
to have this condition where you can't
learn new things unless you put out a
tremendous effort which in turn can stress
you out and cause more seizures.

My daughters memory is getting better with
neurofeedback therapy.
It wasn't good while taking meds, and
while having seizures. Now that she is med
free, and is in the second month of
neurofeedback, I see such an improvement
of her working memory.

Semi Glad I'm not Alone Posted: 05-31-08 01:45am
I'm a 21 year old Marine who just had
brain surgery in January 08. I haven't
been diagnosed with epilepsy yet, but the
docs are still running tests. I had a
grand mal nov 07. ran some tests and found
a cavernous malformation in the left temp
lobe of my brain. i'd been having very
frequent "petite mals"(? think i said that
right?) since nov 04 which i thought were
anxiety attacks(runs in my family for the
females). I was put on dilantin to start,
but had rashes and my white blood cell
count started dropping drastically. so
they threw me on keppra. at the time
everything was great. woke up crying after
surgery because i was thanking the docs
cause i thought these mini seizures were
over. no side effects from the
keppra...felt fine afer a day or two. over
the next couple monthes i started noticing
my memory slowly getting worse. with what
i do for a living, i became one of only a
handful of ppl that did desk work for the
whole unit. then i had another "mini". the
docs uped my dose to 3000mg a day. i've
had three since then(just a few weeks
ago). no one i'm around has had this kind
of problem. i can hardly do any work
because my memory is terribly short. i'm
almost starting to stutter when i speak
because i don't know what i'm saying or
can't remember what i was going to say. at
this point the docs are starting the
process of possibly kicking me out of the
Corps do to these health problems. I've
been so low and depressed recently i
haven't known what to do with myself. this
doesn't have any solution to the original
post, but knowing i'm not alone has
helped. i almost started thinking i was
crazy. i would never wish any form of
seizure on anyone. but thank you to all
who made posts. this info is very very
helpful. having some possible reason for
the memory problem is wonderful. i'll keep
you all in my prayers.

Cheer up - memory loss is a temporary thing Posted: 06-04-08 10:47am
When I was on the medicine at beginning, I
had the memory loss badly. After a couple
of years (or maybe more), I gain my memory
back.
As I said in my earlier post, I do not
have a very good memory to start with. I
tried to use logical thinking. In school,
I was doing well with Math, Science, etc,
which I can my logical thinking skills.
But I was bad at linguistic. Memory loss
is temprory due to seizure/epilepsy. You
can eventually gain it back after you can
control your neuro problems.
I am also on Kappra. It is a very good
medicine (dilantin is horrible). 3000mg is
very strong.
Try to avoid bad habits: drinking, sleep
depriving, skip meals, etc..
Good luck.

Angela,
I am sorry to hear that you are struggling
with the slow response and memory loss
problem while taking neuro medicine.
Is it possible to change a medicine so
that you can avoid the memory loss or slow
response problem? Maybe you should choose
better neurologist.
What the doctor said is not entirely true.
Most medicines do slow down patients
response and cause some temporary memory
loss, but not that bad for a long period
of time. At beginning of taking the
medicine, I do experienced slow response
and memory loss. It took a few years to
gain it back.
A good neurologist should be able to
restore your health so that you should be
able work and finish school.
One more thing, do not stress yourself
during your employment or school time. You
need to take care yourself every minute.
