Hystromecty Or Leep???? Posted: 02-22-05 20:00pm
I have had an abnormal pap smear and have
been told that it is severe I have had a
coloscopy and a biopsy but I have not
heard the results yet ...I have a doctors
app. On thursday but I would like to know
if it is not cancer if I should push
towards a hystomecty anyway..I have two
children and do not plan on having anymore
(they are 12 and 14) now the doctor
already told me that he could preform a
leep (loop electrosurgical excision
procedure) this is the scraping of the
cervical cells but I have read up about it
and have spoke with other women who have
had this done and sometimes it has to be
done more than once and it could come
back. Does anyone out there have an
opinion on this please let me know

Well, a leep is less invasive, but you're
right it could come back. I work for an
ob/gyn and do not recall anyone having a
repeat procedure. Usually after a leep
you would need to have a repeat pap every
4-6 months to moniter the area for at
least a year.
I guess for a definitive answer, a
hysterectomy may be the right choice for
you since you are done having children.
Now they can be done laproscopically with
a lot less pain and shorter recovery time,
about 1-2 weeks.
Best of luck, I know it's not an easy
decision!

Definately just have the leep. And after
a leep you have to have a pap every three
months for the next two years to make sure
everything is okay.
Yes, the abnormal cells can return, but
abnormal cells aren't cancer. Yes, they
are pre-cancerous cells, with a leep (or
the other two options to remove abnormal
cells) they can remove them and it is
highly likely that it wont return.
If you get a hysterectomy you then have to
deal with all of the terrible side effects
of that! That is a very, very drastic
move and honestly it would be hard for you
to find a doctor to do it just because of
an abnormal pap. If it is cancer, even
then it is cervical cancer, not ovarian or
uteran so a hysterectomy still wouldn't be
a suggestion option unless cancer had
spread to those areas.
Just relax and wait for your results. A
leep is an in office procedure with
minimal side effects and there is a great
chance your abnormal cells wont come back.
A hysterectomy is very drastic and
unnecessary.

Hysterectomy is major surgury and should
never be taken lightly. A hysterectomy
should be a final resort answer not a
choice.
I had to have an emergency hysterectomy
last year and I had great recovery but I
say if you can avoid it then do.

I would like to thank everyone for their
advice and for taking time to reply it is
greatly appreciated...I guess I have to
just wait and see what the doctor says.
Its just that I watched my father die from
cancer and my mother died when I was only
19 (i am 38 now) so I don't want to take
any chances. It scares me to death to
think that my children would grow up
without a mother. Oh well I will find out
tomorrow...Like I said thank you for your
replys. :d
