One More Reason Why Pregnany Is More Risky Than Abortion

Pregnant women risk homicide in u.S.,
report finds
wed feb 23, 4:44 pm et u.S. National -
reuters
washington (reuters) - homicide is a
surprisingly common cause of death among
pregnant women in the united states, u.S.
Government researchers reported on
wednesday.
Black women are especially vulnerable to
being killed while pregnant, the team at
the centers for disease control and
prevention (news - web sites) found.
"homicide is a leading cause of
pregnancy-associated injury deaths," jeani
chang and colleagues wrote in the latest
issue of the american journal of public
health.
They investigated the deaths of women who
died while pregnant or within a year of
being pregnant between 1991 and 1999 and
found 1,993 that were caused by injury,
compared with 4,200 that were directly
related to pregnancy complications.
Of the injury-related deaths, 617 or 31
percent were ruled homicide, making
homicide the second most common cause of
injury-related death for pregnant women
after car accidents.
The homicide rate for pregnant black women
was more than triple that for white women,
the researchers said.
Most of the murdered women, 56 percent,
were shot to death while the rest were
either stabbed or strangled.
On tuesday, a texas man was charged with
murdering his pregnant lover and her
7-year-old son after he led police to a
makeshift grave.
Stephen barbee, 37, told police he
murdered lisa underwood, 34, and her son
jayden because she was pregnant with his
child and wanted him to leave his wife for
her, according to court documents quoted
by the dallas morning news.
A second report suggests that
pregnancy-related deaths may be
underreported.
Isabelle horon of the maryland department
of health and mental hygiene collected
data on maternal deaths from death
certificates and other records.
She found 38 percent of the deaths in
pregnant women or women who had recently
given birth were not reported as being
pregnancy-related.
"the number of maternal deaths is
substantially underestimated when death
certificates alone are used to identify
deaths," she wrote in her report in the
same journal.
"for example, if a doctor writes on a
death certificate that 'hemorrhage' was
the cause of death, and doesn't mention
that the hemorrhage occurred postpartum,
this death would not be counted as a
maternal death," she said in an e-mail.

Hey brandy, just one thing though, surely
the homicide is not a risk of pregnancy
but of those who you are surrounded by?
Many non pregnant people get mur derred
all the time.

In my view it is all swings and
roundabouts though.
I mean you run risks everyday - like
getting run over maybe, sure there are
risks involved in pregnancy, but those
"external" risk can be minimised by not
going into dodgy neighbourhoods
(especially not alone and after dark etc)
we all chose to take external risk
everyday. Until my horse died I chose to
ride horseback - apparently the 3rd most
dangerous sport ever!
yes, pregnancy has "internal" risks such
as being ectopic, molar, pre-eclampsia,
eclampsia, or as in my case uterine
rupture - 4 months ago pregnancy almost
killed me but if there was a chance of
carrying a child i'd do it all over again
tomorrow!

Ah, you know some people do have lives and
don't spend all day and night on this
forum. Ever think maybe she is sleeping?
And as far as me not being a good
moderator because "i allowed this stuff to
stay in the forum" first of all, I asked
for my moderator rights to be taken away.
Secondly, I also have a life and am not
on this forum all day long, so very sorry.

What in the world does that have to do
with being prolife? If anyone comes on
here and posts info and on the same day
(at 6am mind you) hasn't responded yet it
is a given that they are obviously busy.
You need to stop being so darn accusatory
and defensive over such petty things.

Well, it isn't just prolife people who get
accused of that. That is a little silly.
You are right, when someone posts and
doesn't come on five minutes later and
respond, they are accused of not having
anything to back up their statements, even
though in reality, they are just not
online. But, that goes for prolife and
prochoice, not just one or the other.

For goodness sakes you know what I mean.
Some people only log on every couple of
days or so, some even longer. That is
what I meant.

It's all good. When I made the original
comment it was in the same day. But,
yeah, now I can understand why the post
would be made, it was just at that time it
was a little ridiculous. Ah, what do I
know.
