Same Problem
Posted: 08-13-08 04:56am

I have the same problem tonight when I got home from work at 2:30 am I had a bowl of pasta salad and now it is 5 am and I can't go to sleep because I have this feeling like something is stuck in my throat. I have had my tonsils out so I know that it is not stuck in my tonsils but it is like it is right behind where my tonsils should be if I had them. I have coughed and coughed and it won;t come up I have drank glass after glass of water and it won't go down I have had this problem since they took my tonsils out especially with hamburger meat like in tacos and hamburger helper. I have not been to the doctor for it because they would probably just say deal with it is there anything that I can do at home to help?

It appears that your have some soft of nerve problem related to your swallowing function. To seek help, you might want to consult a neurologist.

I also have problem with swallowing, things like mashed potatoes, french fries, chicken really most things just will not go down. I swallow, then swallow again and again, I cannot breathe when the food is stuck and I have really gotten scared. I had a cookie swallow test last year and the doctor said my esaphagus did not have the constricting action it should have, he described it like how a snake swallows their food by different parts constricting and releasing. Has anyone ever heard of this? He also said there was nothing he could do to help it. It is getting worse and I'm afraid to eat anything while alone.

I have this also. I will try and explain what i think it is. See i get them in the back of my mouth on the sides. i have what look like slits and holes where food gets stuck. over the years these slits and holes are increasing in numbers (not a whole lot) but i think these holes are from past cases of perhaps strep throat or other type infections. I use a water pic on very low setting and a flash light. After a while you get used to doing it like once a month or so and you would believe how much stuff comes out.

Regarding having them in your throat, thats something you would need to have looked at as a water pic will not reach that far down.

I am also convinced that if this food is not cleaned out from time to time, it will lead to irratations of the throat and mouth

there also is procedures where they can take a laser and basically burn off excess skin so food will not trap anymore so if the water pic idea doesnt work, then this is an option.

good luck fellow chipmunks

I've gone to an ENT for this.... There can be tiny holes present in your palentine tonsils, your normal tonsils. As you age these holes get larger causing food to get stuck in them. when this food gets stuck in them bacteria can accululate and cause it to smell and do nasty things to your tonsils...
I've actually had my tonsils removed because of this, and im very glad that I did, even though I was 24, and it's supposed to be worse when you get older. I only dealt with these things for about a year, but by the time my surgery came around I didn't think I could deal with it for another month.
I would definitely recommend having a tonsillectomy.
