New Seizures

Help! My 15 year old daughter began having "migraines" with dizziness, and photophobia approx. 8 weeks ago. She was tried on multiple medications and was eventually put in the hospital for iv meds and diagnosed with intractable migraines. After a week in the hospitla we were sent home on oral meds. The pain was about an 8/10. She did not improve and we consulted with a new neurologist. Three days after being discharged from the hosp. We were readmitted where we spent 2 weeks. We were sent home on several meds., one being depakote, a reduced dosage. Several days after returning home she began to have complex partial seizures and we were admitted yet again. She was placed on antiseizure medications and within 20 minutes was back to her old self. During all of this time she had been "flat". We kept thinking it was the all the medications. She was also placed on an eeg for 72 hours. She had plenty of "seizure activity" on the eeg. We have not been given a diagnosis yet. Hopefully we will later this week. She is on dilantin, depakote and topamax and has returned to being herself. However she does have some confusion (when doing school work or when she feels overwhelmed) and some photophobia still. Does anyone have any idea what diagnosis we may be looking at?

It is best to wait to see what the neuro says. Sounds like possible seizure disorder. My daughter also first presented with migraines and vertigo type things going on.....

Your daughter may have a lot of things going on as far as adjusting to that many meds in a few short weeks. Some of the confusion etc may wane in a few weeks. Topamax and depakote do well to help most migraines. There is a close connection between migraines and seizures for some...

Hoping things will settle down very soon and it does sound like you are finally getting some better answers!!

I have 2 teens with seizure disorders. Both have had some dizzy issues as well as migraines as well!

Thank you for your reply. We did get a diagnosis yesterday of nonconvulsive status epilepticus. She will remain on antiseizure meds. For 4 years and then have another eeg, then go from there. At least now we have a name and can move on.
