I Have Detached Retina And Am Worried! Posted: 03-17-05 09:24am
Hi - I am new here. I had surgery last
wednesday (8th march) for a detached
retina in my left eye. It is now a week
since surgery and my eye is healing well.
However, the vision is not brilliant. It
is a bit blurred and slightly distorted (a
bit like looking thro frosted glass). As
I am the only driver in my family, and I
am a graphic designer for a living, I am
very worried as to what my final vision
will be like.
My surgeon has told me it could take
several months but am I expecting too much
too soon? He also said the prescription
in my left glasses (i wear glasses!) will
change a lot as my eye was re-shaped. He
seemed very confident all will be well,
with only a slight distortion in my final
vision.
What I need is re-assurance that my vision
is still going to improve (it is only 1
week since my op) - and a change in lenses
will bring my vision back to 'almost'
normal. I do understand that my vision
will never be perfect again.
I am 32 years old.
Many many thanks!

Don't Worry Posted: 02-02-06 11:10am
I had surgery for a detached retina in
march of 2005. I'm 27 and also a designer
/ art director so i'm sure I had plenty of
your same concerns and worries. It took a
month and a half for my vision to really
"come back." my vision was pretty
comparable to my pre detachment level,
maybe a little worse, but all in all, the
surgery worked wonders. My vision to
begin with is pretty horrible, but I think
without the surgery I would definitely be
blind today. Good luck with everything.

Hi there
well, its nearly a year since my surgery
and, thankfully, my eye is pretty close to
perfection. Anything in my vision that is
straight still has a slight permanent
'wobble' in it - but my other eye and
brain have adjusted well and I simply do
not notice a problem. Although, being a
graphic designer for a major sports
organisation in the uk, whenever I design
forms or tables etc, thats when I notice
my impaired vision more!!
But overall, I am very satisfied with the
outcome of the operation - and I would
recommend to anyone who needs this
operation to not worry - your vision will
be almost back to normal several weeks
after the op!
Good luck.

Retina detachments are very serious...
Actually both of u were just lucky to get
ur vision back at all. Much less to have
"good" vision.
Appreciate your vision more and be
thankful for the great doctors (altho i'll
be the first to admit they tick me off
when they jab that stupid metal bar next
to my eye and say "it's only pressure"...
I'd like to only give them "pressure"
upside their head... Alright... I'm
rambling).
once u have one detachment, u r more
likely to have another detachment than the
normal person. Be careful about head
injuries.
Also be sensitive of others who have had
retinal detachments and lost their vision.
Since u have had a good experience, u can
help others.
