:?: I was on hrt for ten years, then took
myself off it because of the adverse
health studies. I am being driven mad by
the hot flushes & went to my doctor.
She said ok, well take this, --i got home,
looked up on here, to find the medicine
she gave me is an anti-depressant. Here
in scotland its called efexor. It has
nothing to do with menopause or flushes
and has lots of warnings re addiction.
What should I do---and has anybody else
been offered this ? I have 2 friends in
england and both of them were given
anti-depressants, so its possible that its
a standard treatment here...I'm very not
happy! Mary

Effexor And Hot Flashes Posted: 08-31-05 15:29pm
I'm 38 and have experienced radiation
induced menopause due to cancer. I had a
hellacious time with hot flashes and my
oncologist prescribed me effexor to try
for depression but did say that it has
been known to help with hot flashes. I
wasn't on it long enough to say whether it
helped with the flashes or not......Sorry
but i'm still having hot flashes (it's
been over a year) and have read alot on
trying to battle them. I have read that
eliminating caffeine and alcohol helps
some, vitamin e, many herbs, soy, and the
list goes on and on. I did a google.Com
search on menopause, hot flashes, etc.
And just started reading.
By the way, I was on hormones but since I
already had cancer and was relatively
young (i figured i'd be exposed to them
for too long) I decided they weren't for
me but women have had success with that as
well. I also was enraged to find out
that they make the premarin from pregnant
mare's urine and treat the animals
horribly. This also affected my decision
to quit taking them.
I didn't mean to ramble - just wanted to
put my two cents in that yes I have heard
that effexor has been recognized to help
some with hot flashes. I guess it just
depends if you will be one of the lucky
ones that it helps. Good luck!!!
