I just had a hysterectomy a week ago and
today I noticed some irritation in the
vaginal area, upon checking with a mirror
I have several red bumps around the
opening of the vagina. I called the dr
to make sure it wasnt an infection from
surgery and he says it sounds more like
herpes. I have never had a herpes
breakout and just wondering if somehow the
out break is associated with the surgery.
Any thoughts?

It is possible, but unlikely. The link
below maybe of assistance to you.
normally an outbreak of genital herpes
would be proceeded by other symptoms such
as painful urination, discharge or a
general feeling of un-wellness (flu like
feelings).
If it did occur post-operatively the
doctor would most likely argue that you
already had the hsv1/2 virus and that the
stress of the surgery or trauma to the
genital area has caused the outbreak.

Did they shave you for the surgery? You
could be irritated from that. Was it a
vaginal hysterectomy? It could all just
be irritation if this is what it was. I
would go to the doc and have him/her look
at the bumps and see. You can only be
tested for herpes and get correct results
upon a breakout, so now would be the time
to go. And if it isn't herpes then the
doc could tell you what it is and maybe
give you something to get rid of it.
