35 and getting a hip replacement Posted: 07-30-03 11:32am
I have osteoarthritis in my left hip. I
had surgeries (core decompressions) on
both hips (due to avascular necrosis) back
in 1992 to try to prevent arthritis.
Needless to say, it only worked on the
right hip.
I recently switched doctors and was told
in Dec. of 2002 (by my new Dr.) that the
main cause of the avascular necrosis was
Dexamethasone. This is a medication
(corticosteriod) that I took 3-4 years
prior to the avascular necrosis surfacing.
I was wondering if this is general
knowledge or just something that surfaced
recently? I was never informed that
avascular necrosis was something that
could happen with the use of this drug.
Please respond if you have had/heard of
similar circumstances. Thanks in advance.

I find your condition due to
dexamethasone rather interesting.
Necrosis itself is the death of cells or
tissues through injury or disease. Never
heard of it being due to anti-inflammatory
steroidlike compounds such as those found
in dexamethasone.
I would consult your doctor further about
this.

Patrick,
One of the things I did was research on
the web. First for side effects of the
drug and then on sites about AVN
(avascular necrosis). The sites on AVN all
noted one of the causes as being
corticosteriods. I found that to be
interesting because the side effects of
the drug never noted AVN!?

Ya know, medicine is crazy like that
nowadays. Sometimes you never know what
to expect. But hey, I'm not sure exactly
what that is all about, but it sounds to
me like there should to be a doctor out
there who knows. Maybe yours can explain
it. This seems very complicated. I know
I study this sort of thing a lot as a
student, but I am stumped at this one.
Tell ya what, I think I'll research this
further and I'll let you know what I come
up with. I'm curious as heck why there
are those side effects.

Hi all,
just an inquiry to see if any one knows I
was born with a hip socket on my left
side, had quite alot of surgury on it and
the rest of my leg.But I was just
wondering about having children and if it
could affect the hip replacement

Having a Baby After Hip Replacement Posted: 04-17-04 13:00pm
Kerry,
rest assured that you will be able to have
children. I have a serious hip condition,
and I successfully became pregnant and
carried a 9lb. 10oz. Baby girl to term.
The only drawback was that I had to have a
c-section. Which believe me I was quite
alright with. My ob suggested that I
didn't try to deliver any other way. You
will do just fine when the time comes.
