My Boss Had a Grand Mal In My Arms Today :~( Posted: 04-01-05 03:59am
Hi all!
I'm brand new to the board looking for
info.
As the subject says...My boss/good friend
had a grand mal at work today and I was
the "first responder". Sad though that
may be I did the best I could/knew. It
took almost an hour for him to become
completely lucent again. By that time he
was at the hosp. Getting taken care of.
After many hours of stress, worry and down
right fear i'm feeling much better. As I
was at the hosp getting looked at myself I
swore to myself I would never be caught in
this type of situation without knowing
exactly what to do. (i had hurt my back
lowering him to the floor) I decided on
taking a first aid/cpr class. I've been
given a couple leads but i'm curious if
anyone has taken classes and where the
best and least expensive places are to go.
The last time I had anything to do with
seizures was 25 years ago when I was in
the scouts and haven't actually had to
help someone until today. I was totally
unprepared for this. Not a feeling I
would wish on anyone to feel totally
helpless/clueless.
The only thing I really did was lower him
to the floor and keep my hand betw his
head and the floor in case he started to
convulse hard. I later learned I didn't
need to do that. Then I just stayed with
him and *tryed* to calmly talk to him as
he went though it. That had to be one of
the hardest things for me to do this whole
time was stay calm!!! Unfortunately I
was the only calm one there. Which was
odd...I'm normally the one to get overly
excited. Anyway, very shortly after the
911 call went in rescue arrived as there
is a fire station half block away. If
there were any good luck in this whole
story that would have to be it! All of a
sudden we had umpteen different emts,
medics and firefighters in a small shell
gas station. (8-10 in all) it was a
sight. As they came in and I was able to
retrieve my hand I let them take over and
again watched helplessly hoping they could
take care of him and make sure he wasn't
in any danger.
Any leads or tid bits of wisdom would be
great!!!

I worked with children that have seizures.
All you can do is move anything that they
may get hurt on out of the way and call
911. When they are done seizing lay them
on their side and wait for help. It is
scary. I had a little boy have a seizure
in the middle of a swimming pool. All I
could do was lift him over the water and
try not to restrain him in any way.
