For about two months now I have been
experiencing a strange pulsing/throbbing
sensation on the left side of my abdomen.
The feeling is really hard to describe
but it's becoming more frequent and
noticeable. I scared myself to death
last week by looking this up on the
internet and reading about abdominal
aortic aneurysms - potentially fatal. I
went right to the doctor, who did a
physical exam which consisted of pressing
all around my abdominal area but said he
could not feel anything abnormal. He did
a urine test which it turns out had traces
of blood, protein and white cells which is
currently at the lab for tests. Not sure
if that's connected.
I'm 47 and have not had a period since
early february, my abdomen is regularly
bloated and painful. I realise I am
probably going into the menopause but
surely that does not involve this pulsing.
I really do feel worried and would be
reasurred by having a scan but at this
stage the doctor does not feel it's
necessary and says aneuryms generally
happen to older people.
The best way to find an abdominal aortic
aneurysm is to have a ct scan or an mri.
Many aaa go unnoticed for years. I
operated on a woman two days ago that had
a 9in.X13in. Aneurysm. She had no idea.
She went to her pcp for abdominal pain.
He did the scans and found it. If you
truly want to rule out an aaa, request the
scans. Most insurance companies will not
pay for the test unless it is deemed
necessary. That is the responsibility of
your doctor. Aneurysms happen at any
age. They are just more common in older
people.
