My Daughter Has Been Diagnosed With Cataracts! Help! Posted: 11-06-03 18:57pm
My 6 year old daughter failed a school
vision screening and when I took her to
the eye doctor he said she had a
congenital cataract on her left eye but
they don't do anything about it! I don't understand
first of all how this could have been
missed and secondly, why wouldn't they do
something if it is causing problems with
her vision. Can someone please help?
Thanks!

My nephew was recently born with cataracts
and had surgery on both eyes as an
infant.
Cataracts are serious, and if a doctor
told me that he wouldn't do anything, i'd
go to at least one more doctor, and make
sure it's a pediatric opthalmologist.
(it could be that if it wasn't caught
early, you miss the window of opportunity
in which the eye could have been
improved.)
if you are completely broke, make the
appointment anyway. Here are some ways
to look for money: tell your pastor that
you're in a bind (the church might donate
some money or the church might have a
member who's a very good eye doctor); call
the united way and ask if there's a
charity that would help; call your local
children's hospital and ask the same
question; set up a payment plan and then
babysit for the money; ask your relatives
for the money; give some items to your
friend's garage sale to raise the money.
Good luck!

I Have Those Also Posted: 01-26-04 23:40pm
I was born with congential cataracts on
both my eyes. First off congential means
birth defect. They are not normal
cataracts that older people get as they
age. These ones are like little pits in
the lens. And act like little snowflakes
that will eventually fill up the space,
then they will be ready to remove. I am
just now having alot of eyesight problems
and I just turned 40 yesterday. I wore
glasses while young but was told I would
not have to worry til I was much older.
Last year I started having problems but
getting bifocals helped alot. My
specialist told me I could leave them for
now but if I insisted he would remove them
.I have opted to leave them for a bit
longer. My childhood eye dr never even
told me about these until I moved away and
had a new dr panic over them she was fresh
out of school and never seen such a thing
before and sent me to a specialist. When
I moved back home I questioned my eye dr
about this and he told me he saw no sense
getting me all upset over something
wouldnt have to deal with for years to
come.
He still should of told me or my
parents.
I do hope these are what you are talking
about and that they dotn cause too much
grief.
