Birth Control And Depression/anxiety???
Posted: 04-27-05 21:09pm

I have been on four pills: nordette, levelen, alesse and ortho tri-cyclen lo.

On every pill so far I have had terrible depression (crying all the time over nothing) and on alesse, levlen and nordette I had terrible anxiety. I did not sleep for a full week on alesse. On ortho tri-cyclen lo, the situation was opposite, I was very lathargic and slept alllll the time.

Still, I cried at the drop of a hat on all of them... Over absolutely nothing too. My boyfriend and I almost broke up several times because I would be such a basket case and pick fights with him and cry for hours. Each time, though, I would go off the pills and immediately return to my normal self.

I have read many places that different progestins and different levels of estrogen can have different side effects. Do you think I am just prone to have crazy moods when I am on the pill, or is there one out there that does not aggravate such emotions?

I have not read about anyone having depression about cyclessa -- it is also a milder progestin, which leads me to believe that it might work well... But I don't know if I am just being naive.

If you've had a similar experience... Please help!!

Some people just can't take birth control. They get side effects such as yours, or others that just can't be relieved with any specific pill. Your doctor should have a book that lists the birth control pills, side effects and which to switch you to if you get a certain side effect. Find a doctor you trust, stick with that doc and work on finding a pill that works for you. One of the really low hormone pills may be what you need, but you will have to experiment. Good luck.
