Gyno Exam
Posted: 05-03-05 00:08am

I'm 19 and I haven't seen a gynecologist yet. I don't know how to find one that i'd be comfortable with, and my mother isn't good at guiding me at anything. We don't get along very well--she never told me anything about how to get a job when I talked to her about how I was applying at places when I was younger, for example, and, needless to say, I didn't get any of those jobs... I don't want to have the exam, but I know you're suppose to when you turn 18 or begin to be sexually active. I've started wondering if I really should get on it because I read a magazine a few days ago that said you should be alerted if you miss more than 2 periods a year. I thought that missing 3 or 4 a year was ok, but... Guess not! I mean, the magazine said it could be a result of stress (in which case I don't think it's a big deal) and I am a pretty stressed person, but, on the other hand, it could be something else. Any comments?

It's definitely a good idea to see a gyno. I wouldn't worry so much about what you read in the magazine. A lot of girls are not as clockwork as they would like you to believe. Stress and changes in your diet or exercise lifestyle could mess up your period pretty easily.

Why not make an appt with a regular family doctor and ask for a referral to someone who might be a good choice for you.

My first trip top a gyno was last year and I am 31 ....... But my first experience with a doc going in for a pap smear I was so embarassed, I felt like my world was closing in on me, he called a female nurse in and I criend the whole time...... After he was finished I could not look at the man..... The reason he did a pap test is because I was about to start taking bcp to regulate my period, so if you are on bcp or sexually active I would advise you to see one and do a pap test. Do you have a family doctor?, if so you could ask him to recommend one to you. In any event, I wish you all the best.

I don't heed all the advice of magazines, but it was reader's digest. I definitely wouldn't listen very much to, i.E., cosmogirl or seventeen or something like that.
I'm getting ready to start orthotricyclen as soon as my next period comes--for acne, though.
Thank for the help!

I would go get a check up with a gyno if I was you. I am 20, and have been going once a year since I turned 18, even though I am not technically sexually active. I was scared to death!! But I go to a female doctor, she is young and very sweet. I don't think I could go to a male doc! Talk to some friends, see if any of them have a girl doctor you could try. It is embarassing, i'm not going to tell you it wasnt, but it honestly wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Its a little uncomfortable, but its over quick. Good luck!
