Am I Having Panic Attacks Or Something Simlar?
Posted: 05-03-05 11:21am

Hi, i'm 25yrs old and this has been going on for 7weeks now started off as tho my heart had stopped, ache'ing body, tired all the time, no energy and dioreha, I have a constant niggling in my chest , chest rumbling, chest pains sometimes feels like i'm not breathing properly, now having sweats, vision is blurred sometimes, and weird feelings in my head , when I feel weird sometimes my heartbeat still seems normal. Been into hospital had loads of ecg's, bloodtests and a echo of the heart, x-ray, also had a treadmill test, my heart rate was 77bpm b4 the test, now it seems around 60bpmis 60bpm low? , all tests have come back fine, went to the doctors and he has said it could be some kind of stress/ panic attack so he gave me fluoxetine to take, after taking for only 5days I still feel that same, what do you think? As its really starting to get on my nerves, am I suffering from some form of attack?

Give it some time to take effect. Most anti-anxiety drugs take about a month for you to notice the difference, and sometimes the change is so subtle that you all of a sudden notice that you haven't had an anxiety attack in a few days.
Good luck.

Yes sir, that my friend is classic anxiety. All those strange symptoms are within the anxiety symptom pool.
I believe the medication you have been given is one that will take 6-8 weeks to kick in, (it really does). Did you get any medication for the immediate attacks that you are having? Ex: ativan? Xanax?
I take ativan (a.K.A. Lorazepam) when I am having bad days and it takes away the symptoms.

The medication will get you to a stable position then you are going to have to build the foundation under that, what I mean is counseling or lifestyle changes, this will help you deal with the source of the problem. Then you can get off the meds..

Good luck, if you have more problems that you think I can help you with please email me.

God bless.

My heart isnt allways racing, sometimes it feels like pressure in my chest and my pulse feels like it skips a beat, I feel light headed/dizzy alot of the time, sometimes makes me feel sick, noticed in last few days , one pupil is sometimes bigger than the other, and I dont sleep very well, allways tossing and turning, sometimes wake up about 5 times a night, stomach and chest allways rumbling, sometimes feel shaky, hate being on my own, loosing weight pretty quik too, lost about 3 stone in 8weeks as i'm off my food, but also the pills from the doscs says u may lose a bit of weight.

It doesn t sound like u had a full blown panic attack.Because if u did ,your heartbeat would increase,( palpatations)from i.E worry, fear, anxious, being misunderstood, fear of havin another attack etc. Then well I worried I was havin a heart attack ,so what happens is u increase the adreninal levels into your bloodstream which decreases your oxygen levels resulting in felling light headed ,dizzy, thinking your going to callapes which can result in, being afraid to be alone?.Then your chess can feel tight and u feel u cant breath properly. Then u can take too many breaths which makes u feel more dizzy -blured vision etc. Then u panic am I havin a heart attack? ,am I going to die?,faint?,lose control? Then this is when I have a fullblown attack and it can last up to 5 min and after u are so tired u need to lie down. There is a book called when panic attacks in easons which is very good and helped me alot and comes with a cd to teach u how to stop the cycle.

I'm finding it really hard to get thru life every day, allways dizzy and chest hurts 24hrs a day plus other symptoms, can anxiety really make me feel like this???? As I have never actually been diagnosed, the docs and hospital presume I have anxiety because all my tests have come back fine. And has anyone else had any luck taking fluoxetine, the docs said it would help and it isnt yet.

Acid it is anxiety, you need to try and find out what is making you anxious, are you stressed out about anything, any recent emotional trauma? Sometimes its purely subconscious and you should see a counselor that deals with anxiety.
I have had all of your symptoms and a counselor helped me surface a lot of things I wouldnt have noticed without her and now I am a lot better.

I cant think of anything thats stressing me out or anything, nothing in my life has changed in the last 8 weeks since this started, guess thats what makes it hard when u cant find the problem. :( so it must be subconscious thoughts r something, got to take these tqablets for another month then go back to the doctors to see if I feel any better.

Hello acid,

you have been given many possibilities that could have caused you to have anxiety attacks. The usual advice is to try this or that drug and to discuss your 'psychological' problems with a counsellor.

This is the typical mainstream medical and psychological advice, that seem to think that anxiety attacks can only be treated by drugs and/or talk therapy.

The reality is that mainstream medicine has no understanding as to what causes anxiety attacks. Most experts seem to agree that drugs do not cure anxiety attacks, they simply mask symptoms. Drugs are seen as panaceas. Thus they are a palliative treatment, suppressing symptoms without curing the underlying biochemical abnormality.

In desperation psychological oriented counsellor - and we have plenty of them here - believe that these attacks must be due to 'psychological experiences'. These are hidden is a mythical 'subconscious' mind only to be dug up by clever psychotherapists, and presto we are cured!! Again this type of treatment is palliative because it looks at the symptoms of anxiety attacks as the causes of anxiety attacks.

The truth is that anxiety attacks are caused by an overproduction of adrenaline - a stress hormone - in response to energy starvation in the brain. The brain needs a steady supply of energy to manufacture feel-good neurotransmitters such as serotonin. Without that energy the brain cannot produce serotonin, that can make you feel relaxed. When the brain is starved of energy it triggers the release of stress hormones - such as adrenaline - to raise blood sugar levels so as to feed the brain again. But these stress hormones - produced internally regardless of environmental cues - are also responsible for anxiety attacks, panic attacks, insomnia. Compulsive behaviour, impulsivity, anger attacks and mood swings and other symptoms of ‘mental’ illnesses.

The non-drug treatment for this condition is going on a hypoglycemic diet. Thus having anxiety attacks is due to nutritional disorder!!

The underlying biochemical abnormality can be medically tested by a special test described at our web site as:

Just wanted to thank you guys for writing out some of your comments. I have been recently diagnosed with panic disorder and this has really helped me. I've been on paxil for three days and am seeing some improvements.

Thanks again, tram
