Gout, But In a New Spot? Is This Normal? Posted: 05-17-05 06:38am
I have had gout in my left big toe for a
couple of years. When I have a flare up
I treat it with naproxin and colchicine
and that usually clears it up.
For the last week I developed some sever
pain that seemed to be between the middle
phalanges of my 4th and 5th toes on the
right foot. It was almost like a sprain.
I only treated it with naproxin and it
got a little better. Yesterday it felt a
little sore before bed and this morning I
can barely walk.
The pain is now clearly at the joint
between the 5th metatarsal and the cuboid
and somewhat swollen.
Is this an area that can be affected by
gout? Or could this be something
different?
Anyone had an experience like this?
Thanks!

A knowledgeable rheumatologist once told
me that gout can occur in any joint. It
does not have to occur only in the big
toe. My gout never occurred in the big
toe. But now that I have gotten rid of my
sleep apnea, my gout never occurs at all.

Thanks. My gout has been weird. Once
it was diagnosed and I began treating it,
the onset became much more rapid
(overnight). Luckily I can fend them off
pretty quickly. Before I treated it, the
outbreaks would come on very slowly
starting with mild discomfort.
I'm treating this with colchicine, so if
it is gout it should be gone in a couple
of days. In the meantime i'm still
researching.
Thanks for the pointer!

While relieving your gout pain is very
much on your mind right now, it is much
more important that you get checked for
sleep apnea because that can have
life-threatening consequences. If you
have it, don't let it continue. You can
