My husband is insulin resistant and has
tried to lose weight. The atkins diet
does not work for him. He loses 10
pounds in the first couple of weeks and
then nothing. There is so little medical
information and help on this subject.
Can you give me some direction to help
him?

Atkins now has a diet book designed for
diabetics & pre-diabetic people (like
your husband). The diet is all about
blood sugar control. I'm not sure of the
title, something like 'the atkins
anti-diabetic diet book'. It sounds like
a sensible plan. Give it a try!

Thank you for the information mshanson.
Fortunately my husband is having tremedous
success with 1000 calorie/day diet. In
the last 3 weeks he has lost 23 pounds.
He has lost 4 inches in his middle. He
has reduced his insulin intake from 200+
units a day to 25 units. His bp is very
normal for the first time in many years.
He has more energy than he has had in
years. He still has 65 pounds to lose.
His diet consists of one slim fast optima
for breakfast (with some vitamin
supplements) and coffee. During the day
he drinks v8 low sodium (with a bunch of
tabasco) when he gets hungry or needs an
energy boost. At dinner he eats 1-2
servings of meat and 1-2 servings of
vegetables. If he needs a snack after
that it's back to v8.
He basically has "mentally" had his
stomach stapled. It is working
discipline in his life, even more than
just the food area. I am thanking god for
his success so far.
If for some reason this stops working I
will definitely check out the new atkins
for diabetics. Thanks again for your
reply.

Good luck to your husband! It sounds like
he is working very hard to improve his
health. Exercise & stress relief is
also a big part of getting well, so I hope
he can find the time & energy to do
some activities he enjoys. The diet he is
on seems very strict ~ I hope he can
eventually eat more to maintain his
weight. I'm glad he is so determined to
change his lifestyle.
