Vitamin B6 And Calcium Supplements
Posted: 05-18-05 08:31am

I take both vitamin b6 and a calcium supplement each day, but i'm not sure how well they work.

First, I buy them at target for about 3 dollars a bottle, and the bottles usually have 100 pills each. Will vitamins that cheap actually do anything for me, or am I wasting money?

And second, i'm very forgetful, which is why I need to take the calcium supplement in the first place (i'm on the shot, as I could never remember my pill, and the shot, while it doesn't reduce the amount of calcium in your bones, instead blocks any new calcium you will add, but by taking a supplement, these effects can be stopped) so I often will take the pills very consistently, and then will forget to take them sometimes for weeks. It is useless to keep taking them because of this sporadic behavior, or will they still be of some use?

I also had a question about the b6. A pregnant friend of mine was taking pre-natal viatmins, and said her hair is nicer than ever since she started. Hearing this, I asked my pharmacist friend if this was true or if so-and-so was imagining it, and she said the b6, or folic acid, in the vitamin was the reason behind it, so I went out and bought some. I'm wondering though, if it just makes your hair thicker, or if it also increases growth.

I suppose i'm asking out of vanity, but i've had a terrifying haircut which ended up about 6 inches shorter than I had requested, and am now feeling down about it. Don't lie to make me feel better though, that's just horrid.

If you are taking a calcium supplement, you need to ensure that you are also getting the proper amount of vitamin d along with the calcium. Calcium cannot be absorbed into the system without this vitamin.

As far as cost, the cheaper the better because they are providing the necessary supplement and you are not being raked over the coals for some business venture trying to make extra money for sales of the same product you get for 3 bucks instead of 30 bucks!

Folic acid is necessary for women of childbearing age! 1000 micrograms per day for someone that is tryng to get pregnant and through out the pregnancy to prevent nural tube defects we paid 2.99 for 450 tablets at sams club. They are 400 mcg and the womans formula one-a-day that my wife takes is all she needs for proper development of our baby. Many of the prenatal vitamins are very high in iron and can really make you sick to your stomach so ask your ob doc for samples of the different brands offered and you may even want to do like my wife and just take a one-a-day womans formula along with a folic acid supplement.

Good luck and I hope you do well with your nutritional needs! :)

My calcium supplement has vitamin d in it as well, so i've nothing to worry about there.

I'm glad to know that cheap vitamins don't mean 'bad' vitamins.

And as far as the folic acid goes, I have no interest in children, at least not yet. In my opinion, i'm far too young. I was simply wondering if the pill will honestly make my hair grow faster, or if it will jsut make it thicker. My bottle of b6 also said it was a metaboliser... Does that actually mean anything, or is it just a con to try and get women who think they need to lose weight to purchase it? I tried finding a bottle that didn't say that, but had no luck.

And might I add, the spell check on here sucks. It doesn't recognize the word 'vitamin' and all contractions are incorrect.

Lol yes the spell check does suck and I suck at spelling so I guess it all evens out in the end. :)

as far as being a metabolizer, yes you are correct, it is a ploy to make you think you will lose weight. Also used by the calcium industry, it is bs and the only way you will lose weight and be healthy at the same time is to limit calorie intake, use calories with excersise and the calories that you do take in should be well balanced and high in fiber to help everyones favorite..... Locomotion

i hope you do well, and dont stop taking folic acid just because you dont want a child now, it is good to take it though out all of the years you are in the child bearing years because it leaves a healthy supply within the body for that time you choose to have a baby.

In order for calcium to be absorbed at your body's absolute maximum this is what you need to know.

1-your body cannot absorb more than 750 mg at a time and no more than 1500 mg per day.

2-calcium must be chelated.

3-calcium must be taken in relation with 50% of magnesium (1 mg of calcium with 0.5 mg of magnesium) and also with the right amount of vitamin d.

If any of these ingredients are missing or the proportions are wrong...Then you are wasting your money.

Bones are composed of several minerals, the most important being calcium. Calcium requirements are higher during teenage years, pregnancy, in breastfeeding women and post-menopausal women.
