Sharp Pain In the Side of the Head Posted: 08-11-07 20:24pm
I have read a lot about the shooting pain
above the ear at the side of the head. I
do not know if my pain is the same, but
about 6 years ago I was driving on a
country road at night and a racoon ran out
in front of my car. I slammed on the
breaks and miss the racoon but a very
intense pain shot through the left side of
my head above the ear to the temple.
After the intense pain stopped in less
than a minute after a while it turned to a
migrane like head ache. Ever since that
time I get the same symptoms when I get
suddenly emotional charged like that same
situation. I have since learned that it
is related to my neck -- by putting
pressure on a point in the left side of
the neck I can actually create the same
headache. Sleeping on my left side I wake
up with a sore neck with pain that runs up
behind my ear and also at the temple.
doctors and physical therapy help, but I
do not feel like any of the doctors have
really appreciated the symptoms. The
closest thing that describes it is
carotidynia that I have researched
recently. Any one have any ideas?

It could be TMJ. When the headache start,
try to relax the face. Also, try not to
eat hard food that requires a lot of
chewing

I have this really sharp pain that every
10 or so minutes has be screaming in
agony. But it only lasts like 5 seconds
and then I'm fine. It's on the left side
of my head and shoots to the back of me
head. It also makes my vision in my left
eye blurry. I've had migranes before and
this isn't the same.

Screaming in agony?
Good lord have you seen a doctor about
this?
If it feels worse than just an average
head ache pain then go see a doctor about
it. Better safe than sorry!

Mini-solution Posted: 11-09-07 19:51pm
I have had migraine since childhood but
for the last couple of weeks, I have the
very sharp pain on my right temple and my
vein throbs a lot.
The mini-solution I have found is that I
soak a piece of cloth in cold water, and
wrap it at the back of my neck and also
press it lightly on the right temple where
the pain is and slowly rub it. Then when
the cloth gets warm, I repeat this process
again. I tried placing ice but that
doesn't work as well as cold water does.
After about 5 minutes, the pain is
reduced. If I don't do this, it keeps on
getting worse.
Do try it and tell us if it works for any
of you too, and earlier posters who went
to see the doctor or had MRI scans, please
post your results too.

I have been suffering for the last two
months what feels like a dull throbbing
pain in the right side of my head which
recently started to make my ear feel hot,
I suffer from Complex Regional Syndrome
which affects the secondary nervous system
and causes pain in my right leg, back and
neck, I also suffer from depression and
anxiety.
I don't get these pains 24/7 and when I'm
occupying myself it goes, it is only when
I sit down and start thinking about them
that it comes back I also don't get it
when I wake up.
Well I recently visited my doctors who
said it was stress and put on a higher
dosage of anti-depressants and although it
hasn't totally worn of it has so far eased
it.
Now a couple of people have mentioned that
it could be associated with the neck, well
the last couple of months my shoulders,
neck and back have felt really tense which
of course I put down to stress also and I
do find if I put my head forward
stretching my neck the pain in my head
goes, also if I put pressure on the right
side or back of my neck the pain also goes
and I do find if I sit up straight to
straighten my bakc it also goes.
Stress can have a massive factor on the
body, I always get a red rash under my eye
which is eczema and has been much worse
over the last couple of months and I had
been getting short chest pains but when I
tell myself to calm down it goes, I also
have found it harder to go to the toilet
recently but when I relax my body I can
then go. Stress can cause many things but
if you feel the headaches coming on try to
relax for a bit maybe have a lay down and
see if that helps. Of course it is easier
said than done and me just writing this
the pain has come on again and try not too
worry as that may make it worse.
Good luck to you all and I hope you find
some comfort for yourselves in the future.

I have had similar pain in the back of my
head. It makes me totally numb and
irresponsive for like hours on the end.
heres a brief history of how it started.
3 years ago I had a horrible sinus
infection. After this infection i had a
tendency to hunch while sitting. although
I never used to hunch I couldnt support my
head anymore.
anyways 2 sinus surgeries and 3 year later
i still have tthese problems. the doctors
havent been able to find anything.
So a year ago I started some research and
found this book called the trigger point
therapy. the book explians very well the
root cause of the pain and the muscles
causing the trigger points. the results
are long to come but the do happen. I am
in much better shape than before but still
not fully cured. But definitely better.

heres some more inf. I Think this muscle
is the primary cause of the pain,
All of you have described exactly what I
go through 20-30 times a day. This sharp
pain in my head is in the exact spot every
time some times I can not even move during
its little episode. They happen while I
sleep they are so bad they wake me up. I
have been dealing alot with stess and
anxiety attacks lately also dr doesnt know
if they are related. I am also only 26 and
my poor husband feels I am going to die at
any time he calls constantly to make sure
I am okay he is worried about my children
and am I just going to fall over at any
time. After I experience they episodes I
have a major headache after and the more I
have in a day the worse my headache is.
Has anyone found anything that has given
them any relief ??? I just want to live
life and help my husband not worry so
much.. Can anyone help???

I have experienced the same sharp pain on
the top right side of my head. I was in
the ER this past Monday and it seemed they
determined it to be a severe migraine.
I've had Migraines before, but never like
this. After reading all of these
postings, most of the common factors is
working with computers and experiencing
the same pain. I find it scary that
doctors don't seem to know what to do, I
am going to find a chiropractic (like the
suggestion below) and see if that gives me
any relief. For temparory relief, 2
motrins and a sudafed pe, has helped me
get through a few hours. Getting the neck
and shoulders treated may trigger it,
seems to be the most logical answer, and I
will keep you guys informed.

Hey, everyone. I've been getting the same
kind of quick and sharp pain in my head a
couple of times a day for the past two
weeks or so. I went to the doctor today
and he was going to prescribe to me
indomethacin, but I told him I really
didn't need a drug....I just wanted to be
sure it wasn't something more serious. So
he told me that it would really have the
same effect if I took 3 motrin 3 times a
day until the pain started to subside, and
then lessen the dosage and number of times
a day until I was totally off of it. So
I'm going to try that.
He told me that the medical community
doesn't have an explanation for these
"ice-pick headaches" but he feels that
they can be brought on by stress, not
enough sleep, or perhaps a pinched
nerve......he said that this often happens
after a person visits the dentist.....if
he/she has had to be in a position with
their mouth open for a long time..... He
showed me that I have a lot of tension in
my neck on the same side as the
pain.....so I'm thinking that maybe it is
a pinched or damaged nerve. He said to
try an ice pack and try to relax. I am a
working Mom with a young child at home -
sleep is limited and stress is maximized!
Anyway - I hope all of you are getting
some kind of relief some way. If you
haven't seen a doctor, I highly suggest
it. Knowing that it is more than likely
not a brain tumor has made me feel better
already......

Icepick Pains Posted: 12-13-07 13:05pm
I have been having randon sharp pains for
4-5 years already. They have been really
random, sometimes it would be months
between them. They are always at one spot,
close to my left temple, and last like 5
seconds. It does feel like icepick is
probing your brain. It is really painful.
It seems like they have become a little
more regular recently and that's way I
decided to look for some answers on
internet. This is how I found this blog. I
am relived to see that they are more
poeple out experiencing these pains. I
just scheduled an appointment with a
doctor to see what he would say about the
pains. I really hope it is nothing
serious. I am only 29 and my life has been
going great. I can say I am under some
stress, every body is but mine is more of
a constant worrying about stuff than a
high stress. I will post what the doctor
says after I see him.

New Migraine Era. Posted: 12-14-07 15:04pm
How to make migraine patients happy?
First thing doctor must know if this
migraine patients have a fear of a
dangerous disease or not!
You can know that from her (his) face,
eyes attention, empty look, or you can ask
her/him about her life and you can see
tears in her eyes or even she will cry.
When migraine patients tell you that his
migraine headaches changed, it became in
both sides and go back and come every day,
you must know that he has a tension
headaches due to his fear and this tension
headaches bring his migraine attack much
often.
In this case you must start talking this:
You must be happy that you have a
migraine!!!!!
I know that better of course, without it,
but there are a real diseases that do a
headaches and there is a headaches without
a real disease as in your case migraine
headaches!!!!!
How that????
Migraine patients can go into a hospital
and do preclinical investigations on all
hospitals devices, floor by floor, and his
results will be negative,,,,. You must
tell him that no one in the world can
write on any medical X.ry, Ct.sacan, MRI,
that we found migraine!!!!! (this is a
very big mistake that I found and lead
migraine patients to fear of dangerous
disease,), some doctors look at the
medical pictures and tell patients that he
have migraine, so when migraine patient
look to this view he will thing that
something wrong in his brain!!!!!
To calm him we must tell him this story
that some doctors do that (maybe to show
you that they didn’t ask you to do this
investigations for nothing), but he cant
write this, and no doctor can write this
in the world.
Not only that but also we must tell him
that all doctors in the world if they will
examine him they will never found any
thing.
He will ask why?
We must tell him because migraine not a
disease but its un allergic situation.
You know that when somebody get un
allergic situation due to different
factors as eat, smell, wear, etc. He will
get a skin red reaction, so this red
reaction can be only due to 2 reasons:
hemorrhage or vasodilatations. Its not a
hemorrhage sure, Why? Because when you do
a finger pressure on it you will see that
red became into a white for a while and he
will back into red color. That mean
vasodilatation, because when you do a
finger pressure you make this vessels
empty of blood (white), and when blood
comeback (red).
Migraine mechanism is the same thing.
As a response to certain provoke factor as
(sun, cold, chocolate, ice cream, etc,,),
un artery in the skin of the head (scalp)
called superficial temporal artery do a
very strong dilatation, and this artery is
surrounded by a very sensitive nervous
branches (trigeminal nerve- the same nerve
that give teeth pain in dentistry- we must
tell him that to know how sensitive this
nerve), so this nerve branches will be
pushed (pressed) by artery wall. What will
happen? Of course headaches. How that? You
will explain him how in lumbar disc pain:
nerve pressure occur in low back region
but pain appears in the legs, while legs
are totally normal. The same thing happen
in migraine headaches we have pressure
over nerve branches around the superficial
temporal artery and all the region where
this nerve branches goes. Here you must
give him this reality: If un ophthalmology
doctor examine your eyes in time of
migraine attack when its nearly closed and
red with tears and photophobia, he will
tell you that nothing pathological in your
eyes its normal eyes, so what happen?
You must tell him that not eyes itself the
reason, but the external layer of eyes
(protection transparent layer) that
protect eyes from external factors take
its innervations from the same nerve
branches that were pressed by superficial
temporal artery.
He will ask you about his nausea and
vomiting, we must answer him that all that
happen as a reflex reaction into the brain
because of connection between nucleuses of
different nerves, but don’t worry about
that you will see how its easy to get rid
of all that.
Other thing must be told to migraine
patient that between 2 migraine attack you
feel totally normal and don’t feel
anything unusual? He will answer yes. So
that mean there is no serious
disease to worry about because serious
disease don’t act at this way.
Also we must tell him that majority of
migraine patients with time they will get
rid of migraine headache, (due to
atherosclerosis that make artery rigid so
dilatation cant be done), that mean also
its not a serious disease to worry about
it.
Now we can tell him that in migraine
disease when we get rid of headaches we
can say that we cure the disease itself.
How we can get rid of migraine headaches?
We must show him how this artery appears
in front of the ears and give its 2
branches.
Its too important to show him that thing
because on this depend all that work.
We have to learn him to do a finger
pressure points on superficial temporal
artery before its do this bifurcations.
We must tell him that if he close this
artery in this place and keep it closed he
will see that in 15 seconds his migraine
headaches will stop completely and in 1-3
minute his red eyes will become white and
he can look to the light without any
fears.
If he do this finger pressure at the
beginning of migraine attack he will see
that nausea and vomiting will never come,
due to disappearing of migraine
headaches.
We must tell him that this artery is not
important, and all brains or eyes arteries
have no relation with this skin artery,
that all plastic surgeon books say that
there is no any side effects from closing
this artery.
He have 2 way to cure his migraine
headaches:
1- By doing at his home.
2- Simple migraine surgery that can be
done in private clinic (no need to be
hospitalized), under a local anesthesia.
If you afraid from surgery you can take
the benefit of this surgery without doing
it by this simple devices that can make
you free of migraine headaches, and using
all kinds of anti migraine drugs.
When doctor give migraine patients anti
migraine drugs he tell him to keep him
away from his provoke factors for his
migraine headaches, while he can put this
simple device and do all factors that
provoke migraine attack to him and he will
see that migraine will never come.
The same thing for occipital kinds of
migraine – see pressure points of
occipital artery

Treating Headaches & Muscle Spasms in
Fibromyalgia
ImmuneSupport.com
10-02-2002
Advertisement
By Dr. Richard L. Bruno
At least once a week I get a sharp pain on
one side of my head, sometimes the left,
most often on the right. I sometimes I
wake up with a headache, but also get one
at the end of the day when I am tired. My
neck also hurts on the side where my head
hurts and I often feel nauseated. One
doctor says I have fibromyalgia. Another
says migraines. But I don't have flashes
in front of my eyes and I don't throw up.
Is my headache a migraine? Is it due to
fibromyalgia? Probably neither. Patients
tell me they have migraine headaches
because there is pain on one side of the
head plus nausea. But despite nausea, most
people with headaches don't have
migraines. Headaches are most often the
result of muscle spasms in the neck, upper
back and shoulder muscles. When a muscle
on one side of the neck goes into spasm it
causes not only a one-sided headache but
also pushes on the vagus nerve in the neck
-- the nerve that makes the stomach "turn
on" -- and causes nausea. Such
single-sided headaches sound like
migraines, but aren't. What's more, we see
many people with headaches, back and neck
pain who are diagnosed with fibromyalgia
but whose pain is actually due to muscle
spasms.
What causes muscle spasms? Spasms are
triggered by physical and emotional
stress. Physical stress can be doing too
much and becoming fatigued or having
"painful" posture. Painful posture is
sitting or standing with your back looking
like a C: your head falling forward, upper
back curled over, shoulders elevated,
being bent forward at the waist or tilting
to one side (by the way, sitting at the
computer may be the #1 cause of painful
posture.) Emotional stress can be anything
from the slings and arrows of living in
the 21st century to the hard-driving,
pressured, overachieving,
work-till-you-drop Type A lifestyles that
many CFS/ME patients have.
How do you treat headaches and other
muscle spasm pain? First you need to make
sure that the pain is indeed caused by a
spasm. A morning headache can be a symptom
of a sleep disorder like sleep apnea. A
daytime headache can be a sign of high
blood pressure or hypoglycemia. Having a
breakfast with 16 grams of protein and an
8 gram protein snack at 10:00 am and 3:00
pm can significantly decrease spasms and
pain.
If spasms are causing pain you need to
take the stress off yourself and your
muscles. You need to slow down, pace
activities and rest during the day, even
lie down to take the load off your muscle
for 15-minute rest breaks, one in the
morning and one in the afternoon. You also
need to balance your body -- front to back
and side to side, while sitting, standing
and walking -- so that muscles don't have
to fight gravity to keep you upright.
A physical therapist (PT) with lots of
experience treating chronic pain can help
you turn off long-standing spasms. PTs can
teach proper posture and suggest assistive
devices to balance your body while
standing and walking. Using a lumbar
cushion while sitting, and a contoured,
fiber-filled cervical pillow while
sleeping on your back, insure good posture
and turn off back and neck spasms day and
night. Since heat is usually more helpful
for spasms than is ice, PTs can do
ultrasound (the deep heating of muscle
using sound waves) and you can warm your
muscles at home by taking a hot bath or
shower and by using a heating pad.
Actually, you always need to keep your
painful muscles warm, especially those in
your neck and shoulders, since cold also
triggers muscle spasms. The change of
seasons -- especially the transition from
summer to fall -- is very troublesome for
those with spasms since your body isn't
sure just what the temperature is. Dress
in layers and bring along a sweater to
keep your cold-sensitive muscles warm
wherever you are, inside or out.
And be careful if you go to a physical
therapist. Too many PTs use the "shake and
bake" method: gentle massage after your
muscles have been heated by a hot pack.
Although massage and heat can relax muscle
spasms and make you feel better for a few
hours, if you don't take the stress off
your muscles and change your posture all
day long the spasms and pain will return.
Once your spasms start to relax a home
stretching program is indispensable. With
help from your PT you can find a few
stretches for the specific muscles in
spasm. Stretch just before bed, first
thing in the morning, every half hour
during the day and whenever you feel
muscles tightening. A handful of stretches
combined with reduced physical and
emotional stress, proper posture and
staying warm will keep muscles relaxed day
and night and stop muscle spasm pain,
including those nasty headaches.

Hello, almost everything you have
expreinced and what you feel is what I am
going through. I'm 22 years old and been
dianogiesed(sp?) with post tramatic stress
disorder (a panic disorder) (have been
almost raped twice, once at 6 and the
other time I was 19). The only things I
don't expreince are the burning
sensations. I haven't done any drugs, but
have seldomly drank since I was young. I
had injuried my head when I was 14 (I
slipped backwards on my cement garage
floor and hit my head hard. Nothing went
wrong so I ignored getting it checked
out), but didn't get it checked out. Have
seen doctors and gotten the works and
tests done. I still need to turn in my MRI
results, so I'm not in the clear yet. I
have been getting thses type of headaches
for about 3 years now... I feel like my
head shifts and my head is moving. My face
tightens and gets to the point that if it
tightens anymore my skin would rip. My jaw
locks up as well and sometimes I can't
open open it wide enough to put two small
fingers inside. My eyes feel like they are
going to pop out and little needles are
going poke out through my eyes. My doctor
believes they I may get a combination of
three headaches. Oh... wearing headpieces
is difficult. The presure would cause pain
and if it gets bad enough, I get
lightheaded and dizzy, then see big yellow
spots. Also, sometimes I do get a
squeezing presure on both sides of my
head. Most of my head pain is on my right
and above my ear. Its a pressure and a
pinching feeling, that effects the feeling
of my eyes. I get dizzy from it like this
person I just quoted. Also, like her I
have fear of this killing me and that I
have a brain tumor. Help???

Sharp Pain In the Back of Head/ Left Side Posted: 01-08-08 21:19pm
I'm 18 years old, and for the past few
months I get really sharp pains every so
often.. The past few days i've been
getting these pains more often then usual.
I'm starting to freak myself out and I
think something is wrong. I usually don't
notice the pain if i'm busy or doing
something but all of a sudden when I'm
just sitting in class or relaxing and i
get this really sharp pain and have to
grab my head. I'm scared that I have a
tumor or something serious. I'm going to
the doctor tomorrow, but i'm afrain she'll
tell me nothings wrong. If anyone has any
idea what this can be from, please let me
know! Thank you so much

Blinding severe sharp stabbing pains Posted: 01-16-08 19:44pm
I also have these pains. I have severe
migraines.. I have been to many doctors
and have had many test and procedures to
see if theres something going on . Nothing
shows up , I have been to so many doctors,
all have done the same, test, then give up
and prescribe narcotics. I do not like to
take narcotics but nothing else seems to
even touch the pain, but some narcotics
make the pain worse and nausea until i
throw up and the pain feels un-pressurized
for about 10 minutes, and if i can get in
a dark room and rest sometimes can control
it. I ALWAYS get migraines right after a
menstral cycle.. It took me a long time to
realize that it was always the day i would
stop , then the headache would build up
till i was sick. I have been struggling
with these migraines for about 11 years
now, and truly unbearable in the last 3-4
years. I get the sharp pains at different
times, but usually in the right temple ,
feels like a vein that is bursting in my
head , have had a few on left side but
99% of the time it is in the right temple,
lasting usually only 5-10 seconds. Had one
the other day that lasted for about 30
seconds, and felt like an hour. Almost
fell down trying to balance myself.. I
have been keeping up with what i eat, and
drink and other things, even down to
smells and things that are seen, like
bright lights , glares, flashes. I work
downtown at a Feed store, and when the 30
second pain hit i was standing close to
the chemicals facing the 3 big glass
windows, and there was a Firetruck going
through town all at the same time . It was
like my system was Shocked.. I was so
scared that i was feeling a blood clot ,
that i had felt many times before but now
was going to finish me off, when it
wouldn't let up. I dont know what else to
do, but i see that there are many others
experiencing the same symptoms that i am..
Really hate it that others are going
through this type of pain. But I see i am
not alone. I have a husband and 3 kids ,
and I know they are getting tired of this.
I have terrible menstral cycles followed
by the migraines . SO>> PERIOD FOR 5
Terrible days, then MIGRAINE for 3-7
days.. then when i ovulate i cramp again
for a few days ... So for at least half
the month i feel awful.. I pray I will
find a doctor eventually that will
diagnose this. If anyone finds out any new
information , Please let me know.. Thanks
and God Bless
