Why Do Certain People Have Allergies?
Posted: 05-29-05 21:39pm

Allergies have a strong genetic component. If you are allergic to a substance, chances are one in three that your child will also develop an allergy (although not necessarily to the same allergen), according to the asthma and allergy foundation of america. If both parents have allergies, the child has a 70% chance of developing allergies.

What you're allergic to depends on your own genetic makeup, as well as your exposure. It also depends on your age -- the peak age for developing an allergy seems to be about age 19.
