Croup Posted: 11-11-03 06:32am
I was in the forum for infants health and
I was just wondering to all you teen moms
has any of your kids ever suffered from
croup? Do they get asthma right after
this or the disease called rsv for preemie
babies? Well a few days ago I had to take
my daughter to the emergency room cause
she was having a lot of trouble breathing
they diagnosed her with croup and gave her
an injection of steroid in her leg poor
mamma she was so sick she is doing better
now but i've been seeing on the forum
similar things with croup and they all
come with asthma or rsv?
I don't have a child, but my niece was a
preemie. She was exactly 2 months early.
She got croup at one time and we treated
it.... She was about 3 months old and
just after that she got the rsv virus and
was hospitalized for about a week. She
came very close to death ( no I am not
trying to scare any of you mothers, I am
just being honest) she did almost die but
thank god she was alright.

Thank the lord, my son has not had any
problems. Knock on wood! But my nephew
ended up having a lot of problems, he was
a preemie and was really tiny, he ended up
with rsv, was on a resperator( I think
that is what it called)(the breathing
machine) and he almost died. But he ended
up making it and is now the happiest
baby..I hope that you make it through the
way that I know you will. Make sure that
you take care of yourself.
With loads of love, laughter, and joy!!
Obhf!!

My daughter has never suffered from it! I
don't think it is only in preemies but
mainly and seeing as my daughter was
nearly 2 weeks late when I delivered her I
think her chances are low!

I meant doing more research on the fact
that having croup could later have the
effect of causing her to get asthma or
rsv.!!

I am new here and probably pressed the
wrong button...Anyway, my 2 year old has
the beginnings of croup. I think he got
it from daycare as he started this week.
He is sleeping now (hopefully) with the
humidifier going with kaz. After reading
all this, I was thinking of sleeping in
his room tonight to monitor his
breathing--also to make sure he doesn't
disturb the humidifier. Maybe, I am
being too much of a worrywart. Well,
what are the prospects of my 9 week old
daughter getting it? Also, what is the
incubation period? He was playing with
his buddy on wednesday (it's friday nite
now) how long does it last and how long
is the contagion period? I am not sure
he will be able to go to daycare on monday
now.

Wow croup is quite common in babies here
and doesn't usually have any lasting
effects. The worst thing is usually the
fright it gives parents.
Usual treatment involves steam
inhalation.
For older children they can have their
head under a towel over a bowl of hot
water. Younger children and babies it is
best to go sit in a steamy bathroom, and
play quiet games until it has passed.
Hardest thing when your baby is finding it
hard to breathe is to be calm, but your
tension can make them worse, it panics
them more.
If in doubt though go to your er don't
delay when the health of your child is at
risk - especially if it could be asthma.
