Dad Just Had His Firt Grand Mal Seizure, Please Help Me Out. Posted: 06-06-05 03:18am
My dad had an ischemic stroke in march and
today while we were watching tv he had a
grand mal seizure. I thought to god that
he was having another stroke and
frantically called the paramedics. We
rushed him to the hospital and in a matter
of minutes he had another grand mal that
completely wiped him out and left him
dazed and confused and very sleepy. I
can say without a doubt that it was the
most terrifying thing that I have ever
witnessed in my entire life. I thought he
was dying right there and there was little
that I could do to help.
He was admitted to the hospital for
observation had a ct. Thankgoodness they
said it came back clear of any indication
of a new stroke, but tomorrow they are
going to do an eeg to try to determine
what was the cause, and put him on anti
seizure medication. They warned us back
in march that he could possibly at some
point down the road develope seizures, but
it completely hit me off guard. It was
absolutely horrifying.
All I am looking for is a little advice
and some information. I have never
really known anyone with seizures and I
dont know what to expect. You know how
doctors can be about not taking enough
time to explain things properly because
they are extremely busy, so I am reaching
out to you all and whatever little bit of
advice and help that you can give me.
Thank you for your understanding.

I am so sorry your dad has had a stroke
and now a seizure!! It does happen fairly
often after a stroke...
I hope the eeg will really show what is
going on for him and they will help
control them.
Often they do not medicate after one
seizure unless eeg is really
abnormal....
If you go to www.Epilepsy.Com
there is a lot of really helpful info...
Www.Efa.Org and go to
answerplace will also give you good info
that should help.

For what it's worth, if the doctors do
find something, they will likely put your
dad on medication that will help. I was
diagnosed with epilepsy after having 2
seizures, 7 months apart, no apparent
cause to them, and was put on medication.
I also witnessed my mom having one, and I
will fully agree with you, that they are
frightening.
Fortunately, with people around, it sounds
like your dad is being well taken care of,
and that is the most important thing.
There is another website with information
- www.Epilepsyfoundation.Org
that you can check out. Or you can
simply do a search on google or something.
When I was first diagnosed, I found a lot
of information on it this way, and through
talking to a neurologist that was very
helpful. Best of luck.
