I Am In the Early Stages of *ruling Out Bone Cancer* Posted: 06-10-05 02:06am
I am in the early stages of *ruling out
bone cancer* and I must admit I am scared!
But mostly I am just looking for more
info.
I have had sore r. Shoulder, at first I
though it was because I favor my r. Side
to sleep (the sore shoulder has been
ongoing for at least 6-8 months. Just
before mothers day weekend I had a bad
week of pain sharp stabbing. I scheduled
the appointment and the nurse said it
"sounded" like bursitis. (she couldn't
say it was but...) any ways when the Dr.
Came in to the room he never mentioned
bursitis. He noticed that in the upper
part of my humerus had some abnormal
density. About the size of my thumb
print. Said we needed to do a mri to
"rule out cancer".
I have not had the strong stabbing pain as
much but mostly an ache.
Wouldn't the dr know if the spot was
cancer just by looking at the xray? Do
you think he "has seen so many xrays that
he would be able to know before the mri?
I understand that we have to go through
the "process" but still.
How do I help my husband cope with out
withdrawing. He is very effectionate but.
When he worries about me he tends to get
really quiet then I feel guilty that he is
so worried.
I also have congenital heart disease how
do you think this will effect everthing
i.E. Treatment and also dealing with the
heart. I have to admit that I am scared
about this too.
What a mess
what kind of questions do I ask, when I
was in for my 5 minute appointment that he
told me he wanted the mri I was in too
much shock to even know what to say. My
sister in law is going through chemo for
lymphoma so it was like hitting me between
the eyes.

Glad That You Got Good News! Posted: 01-25-06 20:10pm
Dear sabbysup2hrstuff
congratulations on dodging a bullet so to
speak! I can relate to the fear as my 15
year old son will be seeing an orthopedic
surgeon on monday to get further testing.
He has been diagnosed with enchondroma on
his fibia and sustained a fracture last
fall (which I found odd since he hadn't
jumped from any kind of height -- maybe 3
feet up). He has constant pain in his
knee/leg and I am struggling to not think
the worst....My luck in the past 10 years
has not been very good & I guess I am
afraid it is cancer. I am a single
parent of 3 kids (11, 123 & 15) and
have dealt with a lot of caca recently (my
mom died suddenly in oct.) and I took
legal action against my employer which I
am in the midst of...Now this...It almost
seems as if it never ends. Would
appreciate any advice or support you might
be inclined to give.
Take care :(

What did the dr say was wrong with your
shoulder? Did he say it was frozen or
arthritis. I am so thankful it is not
cancer! I am glad that you have a good
understanding husband, it does help!
I am soooo sorry to hear about your son, I
hope you get some answers quick! I am
also sorry to hear about the loss of your
mother and that you might get something
out of your employer forever what reason,
you sound like you are going through way
too much. We are here for you if you
need us! You and your children are in
my thoughts and prayers!

Thanks Mary -- Update On My Son's Condition Posted: 02-01-06 13:16pm
Brendan & I saw an orthopedic surgeon
2 days ago and she has referred him for a
ct scan and bone scan on feb. 28th.
Then we will have a consult with her on
march 21st. After seeing the regular
x-rays of brendan's leg she didn't feel
that it was an enchondroma although there
is some type of lesion/growth on his
fibula.
I am also concerned because he fractured
his leg in august (when questioned by the
orthopedic surgeon he indicated that the
pain in his knee/upper part of his leg
started in the spring). I have read that
enchondromas can render muscles &
bones vulnerable to fractures etc. I
have not sought a referral to an
orthopedic oncologist and I am not even
sure there is one in my area. I do have
a new gp and he is quite open to referring
brendan to a specialist in southern
ontario if need be.
Thanks for the info...I will check out the
website you gave me and appreciate the
time you took to respond to my email
question. It has been a very difficult
fall with my mom dying suddenly in oct.,
with me having to take legal action
against my employer & go on sick leave
in sept., and with having to look for work
again (i've had 6 different jobs in 8
years despite having a msc)....& being
a single parent to 3 kids....Brendan's
health issue was the last last straw for
me and I have felt quite afraid for his
future given my supposed "bad luck" these
past several years! (ha) thanks for both
encouraging me to not automatically think
the worst and for giving me ammunition to
be a more effective advocate when it comes
to my son's health.
I will update you as things
progress...Take care & thanks again!\

Update From Brendan's Mom Posted: 02-01-06 14:44pm
Hi mary
my sister breeda works at london health
sciences centre & has good networks
with a couple of orthopedic surgeons. I
have asked her to check out any orthopedic
oncologists & to advise me on how to
best proceed. I have a new gp who would
be willing to make a referral I think--i
have explained the situation & he is
sympathetic.
2 orthopedic surgeons took a look at
brendan's regular x-rays & I got 2
different opinions - 1 that he has an
enchondroma on his fibula, the other is
unsure. I had to fight to get into see a
specialist (long story -that's why I
changed family doctors). So far, I feel
that the orthopedic surgeon that has
ordered the scans is sympathetic to my
case.
The more I read about enchondromas &
the difficulty in getting a proper
diagnosis & treatment, the more
worried I am that he might fall through
the cracks. Some people think that I am
overreacting by going there but I would
never forgive myself if it was bone cancer
& I had not done all I could to get
aggressive treatment.
I thank god in some ways that I am between
jobs as I don't know how I would have
managed to navigate the system had I been
working. I really appreciate your
feedback and will continue to update you
as things happen.
Take care,
:umm :?

fever for 6 weeks and 2cm spot on his right femur Posted: 02-14-08 12:40pm
Hello everyone. Our family has been on a
roller coaster of emotions. Eight weeks
ago my son had a birth mark removed off
the top of his left foot. When the
stiches were removed there was a
superficial infections. He took two
rounds of antibiotics and the fever was
still there.
The peditircian sent us to the childrens
hosptial to have a bone scan to see if
there could still be a infection. The
scan showed a spot on his right femur
inside the bone. We then had a MRI. It
was still there. We have had all sorts of
blood work done and nothing has showed up.
We went to the ortho doctor yesterday he
didnt seem concerned but we said we wanted
it biopsied. The radioligist said it
looked malignant. We are so confused and
are just waiting for the biopsy now. Has
anyone had similar symptoms?
