Several years, after suffering a acute gout attack in my right big toe, I began taking 300 mg of allopurinol on a daily basis. However, just recently, my left hip has become very painful and the sudden onslaught and the degree of pain reminds me of my previous gout attack in my toe. I'm just wondering if gout can attack the hip joint? Also, can it attack the shoulder joint as well? Any answers will be appreciated. Thank you. Peter peter 4197302@yahoo.Com

Gout rarely attacks large joints such as hips. But pseudo gout does. Pseudo gout is caused by precipitation of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (cppd) crystals in the joints. While allopurinol can lower the blood uric acid level to prevent gout attacks, it has no effect on cppd and pseudo gout. Sever pain in the shoulder and hip can be caused by something other than gout and pseudo gout. I suggest you see a rheumatologist or an orthopedic to check it out. Take care.
