Gout episodes & the weather
posted: 06-10-05 5:35pm

------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------

i am 29 years old overweight male and i've suffered several gout episodes in the last 4 years (i'm dealing with the 3rd one right now). I have never given much thought to gout as it is something that hasnt effected me regularly and I tend to forget about it as I go months and months without it effecting me...Although I am very concious of my intake of foods that are high in purines.

The first time I had gout I saw my doctor, they took a blood test and determined my uric acid level to be just slightly above normal, xrays were fine, etc. The only determination they were able to make was that it was gout, after all I had all of the standard gout symptoms.

My question is this - all 3 episodes occurred when the weather was just starting to heat up for the summer and the humidity was extremely high for a few days. Could this effect my condition? Anyone else have this experience?

Studies have shown 34~42 % of the gout patients have the normal blood uric acid levels during the gout attacks. Also, depending on if they are on allopurinol or not, their blood uric acid levels during the attacks can be lower or higher than their usual levels. Therefore it would be misleading to diagnose gout based on the blood uric acid test done during the gout attacks. Unfortunately, such test is routinely given during the gout attacks and causes confusion and misdiagnosis.

Physical and mental stress is known to trigger gout attacks. Heat stress can accelerate atp degradation and nucleic acid turnover to increase the uric acid level and trigger gout attacks. Protect yourself from the extreme weather conditions. That may help.

Gout can be triggered by many factors other than the high purine diet. Without proper prevention the attacks will become more frequent and sever. More gout info can be found at http://www.Icuredmygout.Org . Take care.
