Hi Posted: 06-14-05 13:57pm
I can't say i'm in the same situation but
my family responds somewhat in the same
manner. We don't get to pick our family
but we do get to pick what we choose to do
with ourselves.
Personally, because they're such jerks I
had to leave and reraise myself. I can't
say that i'm doing a great job because
certain things in your past stick and it
sucks.
Don't give them the satisfaction of
thinking their right! Find the help you
need and concentrate on whats right for
you.
T'care, hope to hear from you.

My mother was a sociology major in college
and she now is a tss for a 9 yr old w/
bipolar disorder. I swear my whole
family thinks i'm a hypocondriac b/c I
tell them I think I have some sort of
mental illness such as bi polar disorder
(but I havn't been diagnosed b/c I never
have insurance to go to the doctor). She
tells me I don't know what i'm talking
about and then wonders why I have violent
fits of rage and throw things and scream
and cry all the time. I don't live at
home thank god, but even the people I live
w/ don't listen to me. Can anyone
explain to me how you get diagnosed and
what the treatment is. I know I need
help, I can't take all the confusion and
anger anymore. My thoughts are so
screwed and I can't concentrate on
anything anymore.

I'm sorry to hear about your fiance :/
i don't know how old you are or if you're
in school if you work etc etc but it
sounds like you have it really tough.
Your mother sounds like she's having a lot
of trouble coping with both you and your
sister assuming your sister is a teenager
(aswell)?
Personalsquare posted a number for you to
call... This will help you whenever you
feel depressed.

Im 19 saturday and my sister is 15.
My mom is supposed to be working on being
a mom not a friend (ahem to my sister she
sure bosses me around).
My mom cares more about my now-ex than
me.. And its quite apparent to ppl.
Im starting college in the fall after a
year of doing nothing. Hanging out,
making trouble.
My parents are divorcing it can be real
civil at times (when my sister went to the
hosp for the second time) or horrible (my
dad attacking my ex-fiance). I had been
engaged to him for 2.5 years he was like
my first everything.

yes seek help, talk to a suicidal
provention line, go to your doctor and
therapist, and also go to a n.A.M.I. Or
d.B.S.A. Meeting.
Don't let other people win, show them you
are strong and can over come this. There
are people out there that will listen and
help you.
Please please don't give up.

you get diagnosed by a pychiatrist(sp?)
who has a m.D. And can make a mental
illness diagnoses. The diagnoseses is
based on how long your ups and downs have
been effecting you and how severe they
inpact you.( as in are you able to
drive, can you leave your house, can you
work etc etc, do they last more then a few
weeks do they go on for months or a
year?)
he also looks at your medical history and
your familys medical history.
He will as take note of your mood, your
behavior and ask you what some of your
symptoms are like can't sleep racing
thoughts, risky behavior feeling sad,
sleep more then normal, weight loss etc
etc.
He may also give you this sheet to answer
yes or no questions on.
The doctor will identify which symptoms
you have, hwo severe theses symptoms are
and how long they have lasted. From your
particular pattern of symptoms he or she
willl then determine if the diagnose of
bipolar disorder as outlined in the dsm-iv
fits you.
Treatment will be medication which will be
a mood
stablizer(lithuim,depakote,lamictal,etc
etc) and a antidepressant( prozac,
wellburtin,zoloft,etc etc)..
Hope this helps. Ps it may also help you
to pick up some books on/about bipolar
disorder and do some research on the web.
