a Rigid Purine Restricted Diet Is of Dubious...value Posted: 06-12-05 18:37pm
"... A rigid purine restricted diet is of
dubious therapeutic value and can rarely
be sustained for long", so says a gout
expert, professor a. G. Fam in "gout,
diet, and the insulin resistance syndrome"

Jyy2 - I also agree with Dr. Fam's
comments about a low-purine diet having
little benefit for gout. In this article,
Dr. Fam also suggests a reduced-calorie
low-carbohydrate diet for benefiting
insulin resistance syndrome (irs), which
is a precursor to diabetes, both of which
have a very strong association with gout.
The intent of his low-carb diet
recommendation is to reduce weight, which
he expects will reduce the symptoms of
both irs and gout. Dr. Fam does not
mentioned the strong connection of irs to
sleep apnea, which is well-recognized in
medical literature. Perhaps he correctly
expects that losing weight will reduce
sleep apnea too.
But in my own case, I was never
overweight, and I had both irs and gout.
Now that I have resolved my sleep apnea, I
no longer have either one of them. Diet
was irrelevant.
