Can Someone Ease My Mind? Posted: 06-13-05 19:59pm
I sure hope someone can help me here. I
have a loooooong history of diabetes (type
2) in my family. Also my son is type 1, I
know that is a different disease.
Well, about three weeks ago I checked my
sugar one evening about an our and 15
minutes after eating dinner. My sugar
tested 206. That scared me to death. I
checked it an hour later and it was 147,
and an hour after that it was 101. I
called ask a nurse hotline and they
advised that I should see my doctor as
soon as possible. Well, I had an
appointment in two weeks so I just waited.
I checked my fbs several mornings. It
was 101 and up.
Well, last week on wed, I saw my doctor
and told him the numbers. He said I might
have prediabetes. He sent me for an a1c
test.
I had to wait until today to get the
results. The nurse called and said it was
normal. After I ate this evening, an
hour later, I decided to check it again.
It was 225. And an hour after that it was
117.
And it went back up to 164 after I ate
some popcorn.
Am I crazy???? Maybe I am worrying for
nothing but I need some help here. Any
suggestions??

Hi, debby.
What types of food are you eating when
your sugar levels spike up? If it
returns to normal that quickly, i'd say
you're system works well, but you may be
sensitive to certain foods. Be aware of
the starchy veggies and all that. You
probably already know the drill, given
your family history. If your a1c is
normal, meaning <6%, then i'd not worry
so much.
Just know you are at risk. You'd do
yourself a big favor to change the way you
eat now, instead of having to later. By
the way, did you have your cholesterol and
triglycerides checked? A high
triglyceride level coudl affect it also.

Thanks so much for your imput. It helped
me a lot. I have been dieting- low carb
for about 2 months now. I can not
remember having any sweets.
I would have thought a low carb diet would
have made my a1c look good. Is that
possible?

Hmmm.....If you're doing a low carb diet,
then i'm a little perplexed. One thing I
can say to do is stop eating any processed
foods, and stop using engineered oils.
Those are the ones that sit on the grocery
store shelf in clear bottles and never go
bad. If you want soem interesting
reading, check out www.Healingmatters.Com. It talks about how the
commercialization of our food supply
basically invented type 2 diabetes.
I'm trying to save myself from the disease
as well as drugs. I'm finding out I am
very sensitive to what I eat. You will
ahve to experiment with certain foods, see
what they do to your glucose levels, and
get rid of what is bad. That's easier
said than done, I know. I slip a little,
but I know if I don't chnage, i'll die.
I'm only 38 and already experiencing
several problems, and it's taking a toll
on my psyche.
If you'd like, I can give you my email
address and we can share our failures and
successes. Good luck.

Awesome Book Posted: 07-15-05 01:23am
Although I don't have diabetes, I was
concern about my diet (high in starch and
sugar) would have led me to become
diabetic.
My friend, who's a diabetic, introduced me
to this awesome book.
Here's the website to the book. It's a
bit technical but definitly worth the
read. One of the authors is diabetic
(type 2). He controls his condition by
healthy eating, without any medication.
