Idiopathic Hypersomnia
Posted: 06-20-05 02:05am

Hi everyone, i'm new here. I was diagnosed with idiopathic hypersomnia about 2 months ago. My doctor has to put me on ritalin because my insurance company denied me provigil. My first question is, what kinds of side effects have people who have used this medication had? I'm just curious as to what to expect. I'm 20 years old, and i've never really been on any kind of medication.

Second, I was wondering how to tell my employer about this condition. I have been working for him for awhile, and I got in trouble for being late two times last week because I couldn't get out of bed! I really don't want to get in trouble for this again, because my doctor is trying to get me under control. Have any of you told your employer? How should I bring this up to him?

My third and last question is, have any of you tried any other methods of keeping yourselves awake? Like, natural methods? I would really like to try some effective natural methods instead of filling my body with stimulants. If anybody out there has any ideas, please help!

I know this is a loaded question. If anyone is able to help me, please do! I can use all the help I can get!

I just came across your post and was wondering how you are doing? I've been diagnosed with the same thing after tests and doctors for over a year now. This thing we have is rare and I too am from Kentucky. That might just be a coincidence, but my doc and I are supposed to talk about clinical trials in August.

I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue, and dealt with being late for work just like you for about 6 months before finally having to stop working altogether - I've been on Long Term Disability for almost 2 years and my condition has gotten progresively worse, despite breif periods of relief.

Don't expect much sympathy from your employer - its not that they won't have concern for you personally, its just that from a business standpoint, all employees need to be held to the same standards for performance, and those individuals who are unwilling or in our case unable to comply will be dealt with accordingly.

Before you're faced with serious disciplinary consequences, you must take urgent steps to obtain effective treatment and if you're faced with an untreatable problem a I was, you must take steps towards legal disability. Without that, you are not serving yourself well, and will ultimately flounder as a result of your illness, something that is unfair and unnecessary.
