Diarrhea after gallbladder remuval Posted: 04-08-08 14:26pm
Diarrhea after gallbladder removal happens
in about 20% of the patients. It is
probably due to the bile acids that enter
the large intestines. In time, bile duct
and its branches get enlarged and
compensate for the loss of the
gallbladder.
Diarrhea therapy in such cases includes:
1. Anti-diarrheal medications, such as
loperamide (Imodium).
2. Medications that impair absorption
of bile acids, such as cholestyramine or
aluminum hydroxide.
3. A high-fiber diet to give your
stool more bulk. You can also limit food
that can worsen diarrhea like: spicy food,
dairy products, food rich in fats,
caffeine and alcohol.
