I got a question on hiv infection from
dried blood. I know no one has been
infected with hiv due to contact with
toilet seat so far. But I am still
worrying about its possibility.
Today, I went to a public washroom. After
flushing the toilet, I noticed there was
some blood on the top/side of the toilet
seat. The blood seemed to be dried. When
I used the public toilet, the crotch part
of my underwear did touch the toilet.
Since the underwear might have also
touched that dried blood spot, what is my
chance of getting hiv via this "possibily
contaiminated" underwear after it touched
my genital area (ex. Vaginal lining)
later?
I was in a panic since then. I'm in my 7
months pregnancy now. So this question is
very important to me. Any information
would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a
lot.

Sweetheart, maybe you're having side
effects from the pregnancy. I hope you
have a safe delivery of your blessed
child. Get that hiv thing out of your
head, ok?
No risk, no testing needed, maybe some
pain killers for your natural birth.
Stop thinking of hiv right now!
Apologize to your baby...Who science has
proven can feel your anxiety...And start
concentrating on eating that salad with
peanut butter, cucumbers and strawberries,
coated with pasta sause. Yuc!

Yes, I think pregnancy brought me into a
paranoid state. I always worry everything
that might infect my baby. But I still
got a little problem that I hope you can
give me some hand on too.
To testify if the blood stain was dried or
not, I also used some toilet paper to wipe
it. Of course I didn't wear any gloves at
that time. The blood stain seemed to be
dried for I couldn't wipe it off with
toilet paper. Unfortunately, I only
washed my hands using cold water (no soap)
for several seconds afterwards. Then I
felt itchy on my arm due to a pimple, so I
scratched it using the same hand with
which I just held the paper to wipe the
blood stain. Now I began to freak out
because the pimple was broken. Do you
think if the virus(if still active in the
dried blood) could break through the
several layers of toilet paper (unsoiled,
dried paper) and get to my hand? Is there
any possibility that hiv can be
transmitted in this way? (by my dirty
hand, first trying to wipe off the blood
stain with toilet paper, and then
scratching the pimple on the arm).

So since my hand had no direct contact
with the blood, does it mean the unsoaked
layers of toilet paper provided a barrier
for preventing the virus from coming onto
my hand?
Btw, you said hiv virus can only survive
17 seconds once it hits air. But
according to cdc, it might take several
hours for the virus to be dead. Could you
please tell me where you got this 17
seconds life time? Thank you again for
all the help you offered.

Stop trying so hard!
You're fine, no need for any testing.
Don't get too into the specifics and
science of hiv. Don't go looking for it,
especially during your pregnancy. Fear
of hiv can cause irreversible effects on
your child.
Rub your belly, listen to boring classical
musci, think of baby names, get ready
cause it's coming.
