Hi there - good luck with the trying !!
I've heard good things about ovulation tests, but aparently they are only useful if you use them every month, to try and figure out your usual ovulation day, and then, once you've determined when that is, you aim for just before that day. Apparently, once you get a positive ovulation test, it's usually too late to try for that month- it's already happened.
As far as I know, it's best to have some sperm lying in wait - lurking around the fallopian tubes to "mug" the unsuspecting egg when it is released.
It is also not alway reliable to try around the 14th day before your period.
We decided to try for a bay in december, and I stopped taking the pill in january. I was two weeks late for my period that month, and must've taken a test almost daily !!! I finally did get my period, on feb 12th, and decided I couldn't be bothered counting everthing, and planning sex, and trying to figure it all out. So we stopped actively trying, and just had regular, relaxed sex- and adopted a wait and see attitude.
Naturally, I got pregnant that month!!, but when I had my first ultrasound, it showed that the date of conception was the 18th or 19th of feb- only 6 days after my period began!!!!!! (it was a short, light one, so probably conceived maybe 2 days after my period ended)
if we'd "saved it up" for the extra 8 days 'till you'd normally expect ovulation, we would have missed the boat entirely.
Just do what you're doing, and have fun trying- besides, i've heard that if you have a really intense orgasm, you can ovulate spontainiously. It could be a myth, but it'd be an enjoyable experiment........
