Has anyone had a gastroscopy or endoscopy
for ulcer or indigestion problems or
anything else? Please let me know. My
doctor said he wants to put a tiny camera
down inside me to see why im having
indegestion problems while medications
havent worked.
I dont like the idea of having a tube down
inside me because im a mouth breather (my
nose isnt enough to breath with) and im
scared I might choke when trying to breath
while with the tube down my gullet, I dont
want to have the additional risk of having
a sedative.
Please let me know what it is like.
Thanx

I have had an endoscopy done, it is
nothing to worry about...And I was awake
through the whole thing! They spray a
numbing spray in the back of your throat
to numb your gag reflex and then they
sedate you through an iv. Most people are
asleep and don't remember a thing. I am
in canada and I was awake but very relaxed
through the whole thing. It only took
about 5 mins....Nothing to worry about, it
will be over before you know it!

I had an endoscopy done when I was in
grade 6. And I was scared, but who
wouldn't be really! But do not worry, it
is a peice of cake. I calmed down when I
saw this one guy beside me who just got
back from whatever he was there for, and
his bum was in face down with his bum in
the air. I calmed down cause I knew mine
was not going to be as bad as his! But
anyways they but a spray your throat with
a spray to numb your gag reflex, and that
is al I remember. I was awake for the
whole time, but I do not remember being
awake because of some drug. My mom
laughed at me later though cause she said
I acted like I was drunk, and kept
complaining on how I could not see the tv
that had the video of my stomach on it.
Ya I am cool. But do not worry, it is a
piece of cake! It is quick and does not
hurt or anything. Good luck!

Thank you both for your kind reply, that
was helpful.
Is there anyone else out there that might
be a mouth breather or do u know anyone
like that whos had the same procedure(s)
?
Also, if theres a doctor on the forum,
what is the risk of choking while trying
to breath through the mouth?
(i do know if a particle goes down the
airway u can get pneumonia and have other
complications as a result and if the worst
comes to worst u could even be on a
ventilator)
thanx

Back From the Endoscopy: Report to Follow! Posted: 07-27-05 12:03pm
Ok, I had the upper endoscopy about 4
hours ago. I am also a mouth breather
having shortness of breath/lump in throat
lately, so I was nervous. The good news:
it is so easy! The worst part for me was
the iv-it pinched a little, like giving
blood, but didn't hurt. Then, my doc
talked to me a little, then they sprayed
this bad tasting numbing agent in my
throat. Then the sedatives through the
iv-next thing I know, I wake up and it's
already over!
I came home and slept a few hours from the
sedatives, but now feel fine-no sore
throat, can't even tell I had a procedure
done. The breathing was not a problem.
This is nothing to be afraid of: now go
make your appointments and let's start
feeling better!

Yes, they told me I had inflammation of
the esophagus and they officially
diagnosed me with gerd. Now, i'm taking
zegerid, which seems to be helping. We'll
see.
