Question (autism?!?)
Posted: 06-27-05 10:09am

My son is 3 years 9 month old and he practically doesn't speak (he uses only about 10 simple words, and not for telling something meaningful, but to "play"). There are no problems with hearing. Being 8 month old he spoke "mamma", imitated the crow, now he doesn't. He understands the speech well, knows the names of almost all things in the house. If he want, he obeys all instructions, for example, brings the required thing. Often it is necessary to repeat the order several times. He is less active and smart than children of the same age. Only recently he had learned to spring. Presently he does well the tasks like "to insert the figured object into the figured hole", which he could not do one year ago. He cannot draw and doesn’t want to. It is possible to draw holding him by the hand, but without assistance he draws several lines and there is an end to it, and it happens seldom. He seldom was ill comparing to other children and not seriously. He is squeamish in eating, eats only porridge, farinaceous foods, pastry, meat, yoghurt, and doesn't like fruits except the apples and bananas. He has periodic constipation-like state. Normally he has the stool every 2-3 days, otherwise we give him an enema. The need of social intercourse appeared only about 2 months ago. Previously (1year ago) he preferred to walk along the streets for a distance of about 3 km. Now he likes walking too, but if there are children outdoors, he can play with them. It is very hard to teach him elementary self-service. He plays with mechanical toys (cars) and in the street looks at cars too. He likes when a car comes across hatch on the road with noise. At home he takes a coin and "come across" it with the toy car. Formerly he liked to rotate around his axis, but when we said to him that it is not allowed, he ceased to do it. He is indifferent to music, except if there are original noises like xylophone or bells. He likes numbers, can count up to 3, further makes errors, but knows the number names up to 100, can type on computer 1,2,3 etc. Till 30-40. He doesn't take great interest in cartoon films, watches only "tom and jerry" and likes television commercials very much. It is very hard to take tv control panel from him. His character became recently more quiet – previously he often cried, fought, threw anything. One year ago he didn't feel upset about separating from parents, could walk anywhere with anybody, wasn't afraid of dogs and darkness. Now, when the mother goes to work, sometimes he cries. He looks like a person which doesn't need anything and chooses his interests by himself. Also he usually forces other people to do his work instead of doing it himself. Doctor's advices could not help to find a definite answer – some talk about "development delay" or autism, the speech therapist's opinion is "severe alalia". I think that our local doctor is not a great specialist in this area of knowledge, because I live in the west of ukraine (ex-ussr). What can I do? What it's looking like? Thank you for your help, and i'm sorry for my terrible english.

I know just what you're going through...My daughter did the same thing, barely spoke until she was 5, then started to progress but was always in special ed since age of 2, now she's 19 and has mild autism, she works bagging groceries and looks normal but doesn't get the gray areas of speech still, but she's so beautiful and sweet and cooperative and loving and she will always live with me because that makes her vulnerable in a cruel world but also a delight in a way...She'll always be my companion whereas my friends' children and my other children have gone (or will go) on their own...I was sad for many years about this, but am reconciled with it...My family rejected her though she's wonderful, all I hear is that autism is on the rise and we don't know why exactly, and what I would contribute is that your son may have areas of genius like my daughter does, the boys are usually glorious to look at, for some reason they are amongst the most beautiful children...And it's critical you get him into special education as early as possible, there will be place for him if he does have autism in your heart and somewhere in the world, it will be ok---trust your instincts over the doctors...You know he needs special help now, so seek that out as well as medical advice take care and god bless

I Read Your Post On Your Child

Did your child get the mmr vaccine?......It is linked to autism...
I think the goverment tries to hide it because they don't want these diseases spreading.......If you type in google "mmr causes autism"
for the first several pages there is website stating that mmr does not cause it, but if you research far enough you will find stuff saying that it is very possibe that mmr does cuase autism.
I also read up that in areas that have mercury power plants autism has risen (mercury is in mmr).
