after reading your last post i started
doing the sleep and exercises for BPPV and
i must admit i have been feeling alot
better (but have felt better for short
bursts before so reserved jubilation for
now) I have had every test under the sun
am broke and they are all negative so bppv
makes sense to me ...doing it my way now
-over doctors and so far so good. Cheers
for the quick replys and as always any

I was diagnosed Monday 1/14/07 with acute
labyrinthitis after having weird dizziness
(not vertigo) since Friday 1/4/07, just
after I injured my back and was trying to
treat that with an inversion table - you
can imagine the results. Back is better,
head is not. In my opinion, I don't think
i have the "acute", but do have plain
labyrinthitis - which is bad enough.
Anyway, went to an ENT thinking he would
do the Epply maneuver on me. He diag. me
immed. Here I was afraid of a brain tumor
or something. After talking to others
& reading this forum I am learning how
common this is, unfort. My doc. recomm.
time (days to 6 weeks) & use of
dramamine or bonine to treat symptoms.
My sypmtoms - slight dizzyness, increases
with quick/abrupt movement of head, which
then causes nausea/motion sickness, tight
neck due to me trying to control head
movement. Helps greatly if I support my
neck somehow.
I can drive & walk fine - actually
feels better than being inside. Helps to
rest my head on the car head-rest. I can
work & function pretty well -
unloading the dishwasher - up & down
motion, will stir things up. Treated one
bout of severe motion sickness at 2am one
night with bonine and an anti-nausea med.
Felt horrible from the meds the following
morning.
I agree with others - don't sit around,
unless too nauseated or dizzy to stand
without hurting yourself. I thought of
staying home from work the first day but I
got bored out of my mind just thinking
about it. I have not stopped my activites,
except to do things a little slower &
take breaks when I need to.
I take half of a bonine pill if needed and
plan on trying some homeopathic cloth
braclets. They supposedly put mild
pressure on a nerve in your wrist that
somehow affects motion sickness - we'll
see. Have never used them before. I have
always been susceptible to motion
sickness, but this is no fun.
Caffine definitly increase the dizzy
feeling - hate to give that up - am
drinking far less and in lot smaller
increments - sips vs. gulps.
A lady at my church had the same thing -
took her 2 months to get over it. She said
it just stopped like turning off a water
faucet. I will have a party when that
happens.
Tums seems to help with the weird stomach
feeling.
I will pray for all of you & hope that
others who have this problem find this
forum.

I have a viral inner ear infection too! Posted: 01-28-08 15:15pm
Well, I couldn't be happier to see this
forum board.
On December 2nd of '07 I had a severe
vertigo attack. A month later, although I
didn't have the vertigo I still felt
"off". Pressure in my ears, on/off fever,
light headed, sudden head movements made
me dizzy, sixk stomach, ear ringing (minor
but still) etc.. I went to a different
doctor first week of January '08 and was
told it is viral inner ear. He told me it
will take 2-3 months to clear. The
upsetting thing mostly i find is a week
ago i felt 85% well (which i was thrilled
with) and now a week later i feel a set
back and full on crappy again. argh. And i
have my first trip to London next week.
The doc told me i can fly, just take a
sudafed (for sinus swelling - i have awful
sinuses) and take my antivertigo pills in
case i need them (which knock me out
COLD!).
I just wanted to reach out and hopefully
hear from people that know more than I do
about this obnoxiously AWFUL infection. So
frustrating...

7 months and counting Posted: 01-29-08 15:03pm
I'm having a really bad day. 7 months ago
I was diagnosed with a viral ear
infection. Since then, there are days
when my ear does not ring at all and
everythuing is fine; There are days when
my ear rings and it's just an annoying
sound that makes me ask everyone to repeat
what they just said; and then there are
days like today where my ear is ringing,
I'm dizzy, I'm nauseous, I've got cold
sweats, and I'm just generally unhappy!!
I'm REALLY sick of this!!
Does anybody have any advice on how to get
rid of this thing once and for all?
Disclosure: I am diabetic and my sugar is
a bit high, but not insanely so. I take
Glucophage, Altace, Synthroid, 1 Aprin per
day, and a multivitamin.

Ears Causing things to move Posted: 02-15-08 22:14pm
Has anyone had things appear to move when
stopt at a light driving due to the
current viral ear infection? I have also
had sinus drainage with this. Does it
eventually diminish? I had my ear wax
taken out of my right ear and felt better
with the BPPV symptoms. Also noticed that
my eyes want to have the feeling that
things are still moving but, not as
severe. I am going on my second month
with this viral ear infection. Would love
to hear from folks with any insight.

yep....your not alone! Posted: 03-02-08 14:38pm
i have been afflicted with this #$%2 thing
for 10 months now and i know your pain!
thought i had it beat a few times then
whack it hits you again ..its so
frustrating! I have all the symptoms that
everyone has exactly . bppv is my
deduction after all the blood and brain
tests in the world basically i think the
crystals in my inner ear came loose after
i had an ear infection which the body
normally copes with but sometimes the
crystals lodge in an area or stick to
something they should not and then they
cant be asorbed naturally which causes all
the symptoms...the nausea and the no
energy are the big ones i struggle with...
there are all sorts of excercises that can
be done to dis lodge them but so far has
not worked for me. Sometimes i think they
find their way to somewhere that does not
effect me but after swimming or sport or
just lying wrong they come back and thats
why you can feel better then crap again in
an instant......yep it sucks.... i guess i
have learned to live with it after 10
months ...hope this helps even though in
my case its abit doom and gloom.

Continuation of Rocking motion Posted: 03-02-08 19:09pm
Hi Graeme - I sure hope this THING doesn't
last for 10 mos. I feel a little better
but, still have the rocking sensation when
laying down off and on. The feeling that
things are moving isn't as intense as it
was. But, I continue to have the buzzing
in the left ear. I went to an ENT
specialist and he wasn't worth it. All he
determined was I didn't have Meniere's
disease and look wax from my right ear.
Also checked my hearing which was fine. I
am hearing all kinds of different stories
on this inner ear thing. The interesting
thing is that doctor's have NO CLUE. But,
the pharmacists know what's going on. Are
you able to work? I just resigned and
that's another issue.

Hi Juna, yep the doctors have no clue
which is frustrating as obviously alot of
people suffer from this- im 33 going on
90! I can work (most days) but luckily i
have an easy office job at the moment any
kind of phisical work and id be stuffed. I
just resigned myself to push on through
and live life as best i can although it
makes it tough when you constantly feel
sick...look up BPPV on the net and and
then ask your doctor to send you to a
specialist to administer the exercises
..worth a shot im on a waiting list to
see one (live in new zealand and there is
only a few in the country..think he is a
otonoligist, i know this has worked for
others so good luck i feel your pain

Hi Graeme - same here. The doctor's have
no clue. Agravated about the constant
buzzing that continues in my left ear.
The other things are better but, continue
with the BPPV when laying down and if I
move my head to do things, take a back,
and can read much without a problem. I
went to see an ENT but, didn't help.
That's not good that you have to wait to
see an otonologist. Do you feel an off
and on dizziness at times? I have it
especially when my sinus's drain. I
wonder when the buzzing will go away? How
bad is your BPPV?

hi kel / juna Posted: 03-10-08 20:53pm
I have had this for 10 months too and i
have the same week pattern as you. Just
when you dare to think you have it beaten
its back like the mother in law ready to
stay for a few weeks all over again!
sucks!! Have you looked up BPPV? seems to
make alot of sense to me and im just about
to go and do the excercises 3 times a day
that the BPPV page mentions - have my
doubts as i dont have much faith that i
will ever be over it ..kinda beats you
down after awhile as you well know but im
up for anything now ill keep you posted...
Juna- the dizzyness comes and goes for me
as well .. i had buzzing about 6-7 months
into it that drove me mad but it does go
away . having a glass or two of wine or
some beers seems to give me some relief
kinda cancels out the dizzy stuff and
chewing gum works as well periodically
..dont know why i assume it has somethi9ng
to do with the jaw being connected to your
ears..no idea but it gives me temporary
relief- good luck guys and ill keep you
posted

I am there with you all!!!!!! Posted: 03-13-08 20:04pm
I have been having pain in both sides of
my neck, my head hurts, I am dizzy and my
sense of reality is somewhat altered. My
ears hurt and I already had anxiety
attacks before all of this. I cannot hear
or smell very well. This is all real fun
being that I have 3 small children. I am
severely fatigued. If there is anyone out
there who knows how to fix this let me
know. This is definately awful!!!!!

viral ear infection Posted: 05-03-08 21:31pm
I went to the ER last night. I have been
dizzy and nausea for about 4 days now. The
doctor told me that I have a viral ear
infection. He also said it could last up
to 6 weeks. He gave me dizziness and
nausea pills to take. I have taken four
dizziness pills so far and it doesn't seem
to help at all. I am going to my regular
doc. on Monday so maybe I'll have
different news then.
Almost a month ago I had the flu, then
bronchitis, laryngitis and a sinus thing.
For the last week I've been off balance
and very tired. Doctor gave me
amoxicillin for one week. Now I feel
worse, more uneasy and tired. OMG! Going
to have a friend drive me to Dr. again
today. Will this ever end?
I'm so scared my heart races sometimes.
an anyone help me with more information?

viral ear infection :( Posted: 06-26-08 05:52am
I've had dizzyness, vertigo, tightness in
the head and neck for 3 months now.
I used to have really really bad dizzy
spells that came in bouts. I used to get
about one a day, I'd also get hot/cold
flushes and intense shivering aswell as
loss of appetite and nausea and diahorrea.
I went to the doctor who thought I might
have iron deficiency since I am
vegetarian. Blood test results came back
all clear so the doctor believes I have a
viral infection in my ear.
She put me on these pills called Stemetil
for 5 days. I still had extreme dizzyness
for the 5 days but after that I haven't
had a huge bout of dizzyness since. I
still have vertigo and a tightness in the
head every so often but I no longer get
shivering or nausea and rarely get
diahorrea. I'm scared to go outside or to
go anywhere by myself because I always
panic and my heart beats really fast.
Sometimes I feel like if I get any dizzier
I'm going to faint. I have to concentrate
on walking and I feel like I'm 100 years
old. Since the Stemetil I have defaintely
improved but I still am constantly woozy
and I always feel like I don't know where
I am three months later. I feel like
nothing is real. Its weird.
The only thing thats really weird is I
have no ringing or pressure at all in my
ears so I find it hard to believe this has
anything to do with my ears although I am
experiencing the same thing as everyone
else.
Did anyone else not experience anything to
do with their ears?
I can't wait til this is over. I have my
18th coming up soon and I would hate to be
sick for that long and not even go to my
own birthday. It's also stopping me from
getting a job and I'm feeling really
depressed about it. It's comforting to
know others are in the same position as me
and I wish you all a speedy recovery.

AIMEE23 - EAR PROBLEM Posted: 06-26-08 07:05am
I am sorry to read about your problems.
Last month (May) I went to one of the best
ENT doctors in the country. I went
through extensive ear tests. There was a
little wax in my right ear...no biggie.
Dr. said the ringing in my ears was nerve
damage that cannot be fixed and the off
balance feeling will resolve itself. The
balance, dizzy thing was a result of the
flu and inner ear fluid. I was sick for
over a month with fatigue and felt very
weak. Very scary but not life threatning.
I'm afraid to say it, but I've felt
better for several weeks now. Have you
tried going to a BALANCE CLINIC? They do
all sorts of tests and movements to try
and set off vertigo to find the cause of
your problem.
In my case, my eyes throw me off. It
sounds nutty, but if I switch from my
contaces to glasses, or the other way
around, I am thrown for awhile. Also,
certain eye movements like looking down
then up too quickly. Something about the
muscles that control focusing. I also
visit my eye doctor regularly. You are
very young (I am not) but these problems
can happen to anyone at any age. I have
always had the dizzy thing now and then,
since I was about your age. Hang in
there. Keep seeing those doctors. Good
luck and feel better soon.
I woke up yesterday with the spinning room
effect, nausea and heart racing, went to
the dovtors today and was told I had a
viral infection in my inner ear, the
symptoms are very similar to Labrynthitis
(which can go on for months & years).
Apparently this viral version can last for
a few days or weeks (so i'm told). I've
been given some tablets to help combat the
vertigo and nausea but they do make me
feel really drowsy. I have not had a cold
or flu or taken antibiotics just previous
to getting this so what is it that can
bring this on so quickly, it's a very
bizarre feeling, I actually find lying on
my side helps alittle, there is some great
advice on this forum from people who have
had this for some time, so thanks. The
question is will i be back at work next
week or the doctors again!!!
