Sleep 12 Hours a Night, Still Want Nap, And Often Sleepy Posted: 07-02-05 17:50pm
Hey there,
my problem is that I suspect I have sleep
apnea, but it's horrendously expensive to
get checked for it so I wanted to see if
anyone else out there concurs with me.
I can easily sleep up to 12-13 hours a
day, and then wake up feeling somewhat
rested, but then a mere six hours or less
later I can feel overwhelmed with
exhaustion. Yesterday I slept 12 hours,
woke up and worked 7 hours, then took a 2
hour nap, ate dinner and studied and then
took another 2 hour nap before going to
bed at 1am and sleeping another 12 hours.
This seems unnatural to me. It really
gets in the way of normal life.
I'm not depressed, but I am getting very
frustrated about how much time i'm losing
in my life to sleep.
My mom is highly skeptical that I have
sleep apnea because in her mind there are
a lot of other things that cause such
excessive exhaustion and sleepiness. I
have hay fever (allergies), which I
realize can exhaust the body, but i'm
exhausted and sleepy all the time, even in
the winter when there is no hay fever.
She also thinks that perhaps a yeast
problem internally is my problem... But
she also suggests that some people need
more sleep than others... Right, but not
12-13 hours and a desperate need for a nap
every day.
Any input from anyone? Again, I don't
snore at all... I do talk in my sleep
notoriously, and have an excrutiatingly
difficult time waking up to any number of
alarm clocks, etc.
Essentially the sleep lab as a means of
determining whether I have sleep apnea is
far too expensive to be realistic as an
option... Especially since I don't have
insurance.
Help!!!
Regards, abe

Don't have much time to post in detail.
Perhaps its over sleeping? Try only
getting eight hours sleep, say from 11pm
till 7am, get up and see how the day is.
Lack of vitamins? You can get sleep and
what not but if gluscose and sugars fromt
he body aren't released into the
bloodstream then your body wont be able to
utilize the energy.
Perhaps you have to many toxins in your
body?
Simple remedy: hot water and add fresh
lemon to it, so its like drinking
tea...Without tea...Just lemon.
Hope that helps.

Don't Think It's Apnea Posted: 07-06-05 11:32am
Im not sure what your problem is maybe
extreme exhaustion. I think sleep apnea
is when your breathing gets cut off for a
short period of time during sleep - the
passage to your lungs gets cut off,
therefore since you dont snore its
probably not apnea. Maybe you just need a
long rest to restore your body, it most
likely a sign that you're doing too much

Your Sleep Problem Posted: 07-28-05 20:47pm
Hi there I was just browsing the net and I
came across your message, I hope its not
to late to reply to your querry.
I just had to reply as your symtoms are
exactly what I have/had, I know if you
research into sleep disorders in medical
journals and on the net your/our symtoms
don't quite come into any classiffication.
However I understand the frustration of
trying to explain your symtoms to others
as they 99% of the time just think you are
lazy/unhealthy/depressed etc.
I was "diagnosed" with a manafestation of
narcolepsy bassically to shut me up and
allow me access to recieve stimulant
medication. However as I also am
currently studying into my condition I
beleive that stimulant medication although
helps is not the answer.
Go see a specialist and try to get on
ritalin or something, because there trust
me there is no way that you will be able
to carry on a good lifestyle the way you
are going.

Serotonin Posted: 08-04-05 16:34pm
Sounds like you need to augment your
serotonin levels. One of the best
supplements for this is 5 htp. I like
the one unapproved advertising spam sells
best. Hope this helps.
My son has adhd really bad and didn't
sleep for days and his step mom tried this
on him when he went for a 3 week visit and
it really works !
Well, I have had problems sleeping for yrs
and have been tested twice for sleep apnea
and they say I don't have it, even tho I
do snore and talk in my sleep (so i'm a
busy girl, lol). They say it's just
stress and keep handing me more sleeping
pills.
Well, no more.... I tried the melatonin
and it works wonders for me. I have to
take 2-3 pill sometimes, but it works and
my son and I both rest good, without the
druggy feeling the next day.
Your's might just be stress also like mine
was. Sounds like going to school and
working is taking it's tole on your body
and yes over sleeping will make your body
tired, so cut out the napping and try to
keep yourself busy.

Melatonin Posted: 08-17-05 12:35pm
Yes, i've found that the 5-htp is
incredible and you take that in the
morning. I also got some of the
melatonin that unapproved advertising spam
sells as well to take at night and it
works really well. They have a 3mg or
1mg sublingual (which is the type you
want) and they also have a 3mg slow
release melatonin. If you take a slow
release right before bed and then put a
regular one under your tongue you not only
fall asleep but you don't wake up all
through the night.
There are also a bunch of articles on
unapproved advertising spam that tell
about sleep problems. Seems you can also
treat it with a special "light therapy" as
well.

I take melatonin too and it works great.
No bad side effects except you might
accidentally raise your melatonin levels a
little higher than you would like but
that's no biggie and after a few nights
you'll figure out what dose is good for
you. Although I didn't want to write to
tell you about a drug to fix the problem.
I'm trying to help you identify it.
Humans don't normally sleep for 12 hours a
night. It's about 8.5 average. 9 for
teens 8-8.5 for adults and seniors. So
something is up with your sleep pattern.
Something isn't happening to progress to
the next stage of sleep or something is
happening to disrupt it. When stages get
interrupted it's kind of like a reset
button. That's why sleeping without
waking up in between is the best way to go
about it. It could be the amount of light
you get. For instance if you work night
shift or live in the arctic circle that
can really mess with sleep and sometimes
lead to long-term health problems. It
could very likely be the bed. I've slept
at home in my caca bed and then slept on
some fancy memory foam beds and the
difference is astronomical. Even
distribution of weight does so much to
keep the moving down at night which can
interrupt your sleep without you even
realizing it. I'd get one but I don't
have 3k to spend on a bed right now.
Also, and I know this isn't normal, but
about a half an hour of exercise a day
really helps. Exercise helps sleep so
damn much. It's the last thing people
want to hear but it's true. Just don't
finish it within a half hour of when you
wanna sleep. Stress can be a factor too.
Like if you have unpaid bills or are
lonely that can make sleep really hard.
Most important is good bed, proper amounts
of light during the day (most people don't
have a problem with it), and enough
exercise. Www.Sleepfoundation.Org/
a> talks about sleep cycles with a flash
cartoon if yer interested. I watched it.
I was guuuud.

Maybe Its Narcolepsy Posted: 11-01-05 17:48pm
I had the same problem as you did. I
thought I had sleep apnea cause I snore
really loudly and a few other family
members have it also. I went in for a
overnight sleep study and a nap study the
day after the sleep study and found out
that I have narcolepsy. I have to take
amphetamines (dexedrine) but they seem to
work. I have been on them almost a year,
since I found out. The only problem is
they loose their potency, but I skip one
day a week and it helps. You should talk
to your doctor and get a sleep study, they
can find out if you have sleep apnea that
way too. It may be expensive, but sleep
apnea can kill you, so I think its worth
the cost to find and cure your problem.

Sleeping 12 Hours, Nap, Still Tired - Me, Too Posted: 11-02-05 20:24pm
Hello - I really hope you get this reply.
I find the other responses to your post
incredibly frustrating. I've had the
same exact symptoms as you describe - and
people said the sames things to me: "just
get up after 8 hours." I wanted to
scream. If I could get up after 8 hours,
I would. "you just need a lot of sleep,"
"take sleeping pills" - which I find
funny, since the problem is sleeping too
much.
Anyway, you wonder if it might be sleep
apnea. I had the opportunity to go to a
sleep clinic and I found out that indeed I
had sleep apnea. I had no idea - I don't
even snore, i'm not obese, and i'm not an
old man (actually i'm a young healthy
woman). Sleep apnea absolutely causes
constant exhaustion (contrary to what
other posters said) because when you stop
breathing during sleep (as I do every 2
minutes apparently) your brain wakes you
up in order to start breathing again -
even if you wake up so minimally that you
don't even know you are doing it.
Therefore you never get a restful sleep.
So you are exhausted all the time.
I've been battling this since my diagnosis
in january 2005. I've been struggling
with the usual treatment - cpap - and it
is not working. The masks you have to
sleep with are so uncomfortable that it is
impossible for me to use them. I just
purchased my third mask ($200) and it is
the same thing.
I sympathize with your inability to go to
a clinic - I was only able to go because
my father paid for it, I don't have
insurance either. But, i'm no better
because the usual treatment isn't working
for me, and I can't afford to go to
another doctor.
Good luck.

Try Iron Posted: 11-02-05 21:08pm
I am also this way, try iron supplements.
Cheap to buy if it is not working for
you...
Some of the symptoms of a lack of iron
include, always tired(sometimes your head
just feels to heavy to carry), shortness
of breath for fairly simple things(a set
of stairs), sometimes darkening under the
eyes, sometimes the feeling of being
cold.....
But the biggest for me is I never stop
sleeping, so I take the iron for a week or
two, and stop until I start to feel this
way again.
Hope you find something that works for
you, because I know the feeling of
sleeping your life away. (or so it seems)

You should have your iron tested though,
because taking it when you don't need it,
could put toxic levels in your liver.

fever once, and it was the strangest
thing, because I went from not sleeping at
all, to sleeping loads! But now im back
to not sleeping at all! Lol

That you just came off of some sort of
sleep meds right, but if you did it fits
the criteria, I think, dont hold me to
this stuff

That was crazy. You can sleep for
12-13hours.
I wish that I can be same like you because
I only sleep around 5hour. I got to wake
up early. I will lying on the bed each
time before I wake up because I got not
enough sleep. Some of my friends sleep 3
hours per day. All of us got not enough
rest which caused by the stupid school. I
am very tired.

Re: Sleep 12 Hours a Night, Still Want Nap, And Often Sleepy Posted: 04-10-06 21:48pm
Sleep apnia is one thing that can do this,
also if you have shallow breathing, or
your pulse slows down too much this can
happen causing hypoxia. Getting a sleep
test done is the only answer to this
mystery.
Whithout it you will never know what is
taking place during sleep that is causing
your problem. I used to sleep 20 hrs a
day and was still exhausted until I had
the problem fixed and now I sleep 6-8
hours and feel perfectly fine. Pain in
muscles, depression, anxiety,and headaches
in the back of the neck can also be caused
by sleep disorders.

this made me sleepy Posted: 03-26-08 20:17pm
I have felt sleepy all the time here
lately too. And I know I am getting enough
sleep. I am gonna see a specialist soon.
Check back on here and I will let ya'll
know what I found out. Maybe it could help
someone else too. But I'm gonna go now
because reading all this made me sleepy.
I'm going to bed.
