With you period being irregular it is hard to tell when you are ovulating. I would recommend buying opk's, or using the temping method to find out when you are ovulating. You can use one or the other, but they actually work better when you use them together. If you are using opk's alone, I would start using them at about 10 days after you period. When you see a positive, meaning a really dark 2nd line, you are about to ovulate. Usually 12-36 hours later. Opk's measure the amount of lh in you urine, so you have a surge of lh right before you ovulate.
As for the temping method, what you do is buy a thermometer. Basal preferably, but any digital will work. Start taking you temperature every morning, before you get out of bed--around same time everyday. A woman's temp is usually at around 97 before ovulation and peaks at around 98 during ovulation. It's said if your temp stays contanst after ovulation you are probably pregnant, and if there is a dip of one day after your peak you just had implantation. You will start noticing a pattern every month and will be able to tell when you ovulate this way.
There are other methods such as checking cervical position, and cervical mucous, or just knowing you body, since some women will feel a pinch where the ovaries are during ovulation.
Good luck, and I would try another test if you do not get a period in several days.
