Diarrhea Associated With Gallbladder Removal
Posted: 07-06-05 21:50pm

:?: I had my gallbladder removed on 4-15-05 and I must say I feel 110 percent better the only problem I have personally experienced is that sometimes I experience diarrhea after eating. I have not returned to the work force, scared to go out and eat and refuse to travel for fear the diarrhea will creep up on me and I must be near a bathroom.

My question was I heard that calcium supplements help diarrhea..I was wondering if anyone else had any suggestions?

Hi,
yes diarrhea happens to about 1% of people after having their gallbladder removed, because since the liver don't have the organ (gallbladder) to store concentrated bile, it goes to the instestnes instantly, it doesn't know when to stop producing bile, cause thats the gallbladders job to tell the liver when to stop making bile, and without the gallbladder the liver just keeps making the bile, and it causes diarrhea.
I had my gallbladder out just a few weeks ago, I have experienced some diarrhea, but mostly I can't go to the bathroom now... So I understand what your going through.... Yes calcuim does help,,, but fiber would help better,,, try taking some fiber pills it helps firm up ur stools, and ull have less diarrhea......
Hope this helps.......
Sorry if any typos....

Hey!

Your welcome, I was glad to help you out.

(imodium ad) can help stop diarrhea

but the fiber capsules will help better with keeping the diarrhea gone,

i take prune fiber capsules, they are pills that are fiber but with prune fruit.

It has prune, and psyllium fiber,, its easy to find in any drugstore....
Ill look for the orignal box and write down the name for ya,

but look at the store for any brand of fiber pills, with prunes, and psyllium fiber...
Oh and remember that while you have diarrhea, drink plenty of fluids cause you can become dyhdrated... And you need water, and juices for vitimains, and minerals that you lose when your body is having cases of diarrhea....

And remeber your never alone,,, were in the same boat......
I know excally what your going through...................

Yeah my surgeon prescribed a powder called "cholestyramine for oral suspension light" but it is not convenient and when I do take it I feel bloated and gassy.

I am definety going to check into the fiber supplements.

Thanks,
cass

Hi there! Be sure to avoid foods such as tomatoes and foods high in acid. Their are a lot of foods that you used to enjoy eating but are unable too now or since your gb surgery. Be careful wiith the fiber, alot of people get loose stool from it!
Good luck!
Sincerely,
sandy

That is my big fear with using fiber. I hear that fiber can cause loose bowels and that is something I do not need.
