Emergency Question About Birth Control- Please Respond!
Posted: 11-17-03 21:05pm

Okay, i'm writing this because of my girlfriend, who i'm very concerned for right now. She started taking birth control about 3 months ago, with no real problems other than an ocassional minor spotting. 6 (today is monday, and she told me last tuesday) days ago, however, she told me that she had begun her period. The thing is that she still had 6 or 7 blue pills left. During the week between then and now she had been experiencing extreme cramping and pain. Today is around the time where she would normally experience her period because she is at the green pills. Over the weekend, she had visited me (i'm in college, and she lives at home), and, over the weekend, she was experiencing major bleeding. Today she headed straight from here to work at around 1:30 pm. To get to her job at 4pm. She called me around 7pm tonight and told me that when she had gotten to work, she had bled extremely, and it had gotten all over her pants to her socks. After she changed her pants, she continued to bleed extremely and had been through 3 more tampons. She keeps me aware of when she is having a period, and normally it lasts around 3 days at most. Not only did this start a week early, but, it has lasted a week, is still continuing, and she is bleeding much more heavily than normal. Neither of us know what is going on, and, quite honestly, it's scarey even on my behalf so, I couldn't even imagine what she's going through with all of this. If anyone knows at all what is going on or has any idea of it or what she/we should do, please respond! I don't know what else to say, but, here are some more things that stick out in my mind that might contribute to this-

she is 22- I don't know if age has anything to do with it.

We do not have protected sex- it's bad, even with birth control, I know...And that's basically all there is to it.

She described the "discharged" as more liquid than usual- she said her normal periods are more "clotted"

thanks to anyone who took the time to read all of this and a special thank you in advance to anyone who can reply.

Call a Doctor!!!

The first thing she should do is call her doctor who prescribed the pills and let them know what is going on. Why let it keep going like this, she could be loosing a lot of blood. And she sounds like she is wasting alot of tampons, try using a pad and see if that last longer. Or double it up, use a tampon and a pad so she doesnt ruin her pants anymore. Her body could be changing because of the pill, everyone has different reactions. I have bleed before when I was still on the blue pills, and have bleed for more than a week before, but it wasn't that heavy. I wouldn't sit around and wait any longer, go the the emergency room if it's that serious! This could be break through bleeding which is a side effect of the pill!!!
Hope everything turns out ok!!!!

Definately get her to the doctor or the er. It sounds like she is bleeding way too much.

It is common to have breakthrough bleeding (spotting), but from what you described, that is a lot more than just breakthrough bleeding.

Good luck, and I hope she is ok!
