Dna Test While Carring a Child Posted: 07-09-05 06:11am
I am 4 months pregnant with my second
child. The father of my children has left
me. I asked him if he was going to be
there when the child is born and he said
yes but said he wont sigh the birth
certificate until after a dna test. I
know for sure it is his baby because I
never cheated on him. Can you get this
test before the baby is born? I dont want
my child to have a blank space under the
fathers name on the birth certificate.

Hey ya, I always thought you have to wait
till the baby is born. But can't you
write the babys fathers name on it after
the dna test came back? Thats not fair
that he doesn't believe ya. X

Well I done alittle research on it and you
can but its not a good idea because things
can go wrong I guess. His name wont be on
the orignal one. I know being pregant
emotions are high but still he is the
father and he knows that.

Yes you can get it done while pregnant but
it's an amnio and amnio tests carry a risk
of miscarriage.

Thats prob why I never knew you could get
one done while preg, coz they wouldn't
want you risk having a miscarriage. Does
he just not want to believe you because he
is scared?

It is unlikely this would be done. It
would be during an amnio. Talk to your
doctor about it. You'll probably have to
wait until the baby is born.

Yes, you can get a Prenatal Paternity
Testing. Amniocentesis – During the 14th
to 24th week of pregnancy, a sample of
amniotic fluid can be drawn. The amniotic
fluid, found in the sac surrounding the
developing fetus, contains fetal cells
that can be used for DNA analysis.
Sampling is performed transabdominally—a
needle is inserted through the abdominal
wall to extract amniotic fluid.
Both of these procedures, which are used
to test for genetic birth defects and
other possible health problems with the
baby, are performed by an OB/GYN. Because
the procedures are invasive, there is a
slight risk of infection and a smaller
risk of miscarriage. We urge the mother to
consult her OBGYN for more information
about these risks.
You will need to pay a separate
physician’s fee for prenatal sampling,
ranging from $500-$1,500. If the mother is
having the CVS or amniocentesis sample
collected for medical purposes (in
addition to paternity), her insurance
company may cover this fee.
There are risks or miscarriage and
infection, but you need to understand that
when your OBGYN is doing the procedure, he
does use an ultrasound to see exactly
where the needle is going so it dosen't
poke or prick the baby. I'm thinking about
going this route, since I'm 18 weeks
pregnant. I won't write my whole story in
here, it's posted in a thread.
