Worried About My Daughter
Posted: 07-19-05 09:39am

My daughter has been sick for about a month. She had two diagnosed bouts of strep throat. During the first she developed an ear infection with ruptured membrane while on the antibiotic, so it was changed. Then ear infection in other ear--another change. Three weeks later another strep throat and yeast infection from first round of antibiotics. She's 19, and was also raped after the first strep throat episode. After recovering from strep and taking the diflucan for yeast, she developed abdominal distention (left sided) and ended up in er. Unable to diagnose they discharged ehr and scheduled ultrasound (based on the possibility of gall bladder trouble). Us was clear. A visit to the doctor and simple abd. X-ray showed a fecal impaction in the ascending and transverse colon with a grossly distended colon. Tx: magnesium citrate, metamucil, 8 glasses of water daily, and high fiber diet. After a week she has still not eliminated. She has had some watery stool after the mag. Citrate, and some tiny, thin stools since, but no a real evacuation. She is having a lot of discomfort and some pain on both sides of her abdomen. The doctor said she should make another appointment in 2 weeks if she is still having problems. My question is: should she wait another week before contacting the doctor? Isn't there danger in continued bowel distention? Is there anything she can do other than the daily use of metamucil, dietary fiber, and increasing liquids?

Hello, sorry i'm not a doctor and I cannot even comment on your daughter's medical condition. I haven't the slightest clue as to what may be going on with her. Please... Do not wait to contact the doctor. If you have to question yourself on it.. Go with your first mind. That's what doctors get paid the big bucks for.. To answer our questions. Good luck with your daughter she is in my prayers. -messina
